World's airlines stuck in time warp

Airline consolidation is still a long way off, writes Matt O'Sullivan.

TONY FERNANDES, the publicity hungry boss of Asia's largest budget airline, has never shied away from letting rip a timely tune. Jetting into Sydney for just a day this week to trumpet AirAsia's strategic alliance with Qantas's budget offshoot, Jetstar, the former Warner Music executive summed up industry-wide sentiment about a sector caught in a time warp.

"One of the sad things about this recession is that many things haven't changed," the formula oneteam boss and aspiring British football club owner says.
