Woolworths gift card thread

Yep - thinking its the beginning of the end but...
Went to a new shop near me - 'Transaction not Allowed'

Went to another - all good - for now -
This could be the last hurrah :(

which one is that? went to my local woolies and declined... i wonder if it's only applied to visa 1 or all other gift cards too for example david jones and woolies

It's for all gift cards.

The update patch for all machines is slowly being pushed out to each POS machine thus some work some dont.

oh no... is this from internal memo? how do you know about it? I went to buy a visa 1 but payment wouldnt go through. I also tried a djs card but the terminal did allow me to continue after putting my in egift card number. I didnt continue to put in the password but i assumed it worked?? ?

An educated and logical guess.

I was in the process of buying some cards, ecards got approved, but when it came to activation it failed and said transaction not allowed. And machine just hung there.
Went to another machine to continue buying a few more no issues.
The error'ed machine was very slow, like it was lagging or such meaning it was getting updates or being patched.

Im sure once all machines are patched a memo will be sent out on how to deal with this.

Look. Your probably right and I'd assume along those lines too but you've made a lot of assumptions unless you have Inisder info

Just tried to buy Event Cinemas & eBay GCs yesterday at Town Hall WW, manned checkout. Transaction not allowed. Staff said that people who've tried to do what I've done over the last week have all been seeing the same rejections.

I haven't yet tried Dr Ralph's suggestion of trying to buy with a non-GC item, but if that doesn't work (will try again soon) then ouch, there goes the 5% hack for me...

Buying with no GC item with or without, doesnt make no difference. Some patched/updated systems can tell, and "transaction error".

Generally the manned machines are all now updated, the self ones take a bit more time to push out with wifi I think.

I have tried but it didn't work at my local manned check-out.

Yeah, if I were a betting man I don't think it would make much of a difference either - at least, if the given intent is to stop the purchase of GCs with EGCs.

The staff member yesterday told me it was to prevent people from 'cycling money' (basically trying to say fraud without using the word). I'm glad I only have $1200 of EGCs right now - I can realistically use them up on groceries before they expire in 2+ years.

Relatedly, has anyone tried using EGCs to pay for Opal top-ups in the last week or so? It'd be a consolation prize if that still works, given every work day costs me $8.8 in Opal charges alone. This isn't a GC-buy-GC scenario so I'd be pretty surprised (and miffed) if they took that off the table as well.

I thought they dont have an expiry date.

Oh even better then. I just have a blanket assumption GCs of any sort have an expiry. Still, greatly diminished utility. I conservatively estimate that less than 1% of my EGC spend is actually on groceries.

Saltywings Opal still works with EGC -- I tried to do giftcard+opal yesterday and it didnt work, but opal on its own was fine with EGC.

Not after the RBA made GC's more heavily looked at due to too many smart people using itune cards to pay ATO tax bill. Cant believe them.
