Travelling HKG-FRA with CX in J, myself and Mrs Batesy. 23:50pm departure.
Have not been to HKG before so all new. Are both lounges pretty much the same?

Any lounge commentary on below appreciated.
This is our OneWorld award so flights all in J except two.
As well as SG and flying in J I also have priority pass.
SYD-Jakarta QF
Jakarta -HKG CX
HKG-FRA CX
FRA-EDI (not award flight) with Lufthansa in Y
EDI-London BA (not award flight) BA in Y
LHR T5-JFK BA
JFK-LAX AA
LAX to SIN via HKG with CX
SIN-SYD BA

Generally I would choose the lounge which is closer to the gate. The wing is at gate 4 , so good for low number gates whilst the pier is near gate 62. I prefer the wing, but use the pier if departing from gates at the pier end of terminal

As Dave says, choose the lounge closest to your gate and you’ll enjoy it no matter what.

The Pier is located downstairs, so there’s no view, but it’s where I’ve been most frequently, while the Wing is on the second floor and has a view out the windows of parts of the tarmac.

As you’re flying back through HKG at a later date, you’ll be able to see both anyway ;)

I prefer the Wing. If you are coming from landside, the Wing is close to checkin area and I'd just go there, leaving an extra 10mins early to get to gate if it's one of the far gates on one of the piers. If you go straight to the Pier, it's still going to take 5-10mins to get there.

If in transit, then go to whichever makes sense.

If you have heaps of time, you can always go to both I think ....

I tried both CX Lounges last year and I preferred the wing as well. Bit more open as you get the views etc. But both are good. I do like the noodle bar.

The QF Lounge is also up the same end as the wing too. I'm trying that one Saturday week for the first time.

To get from the Wing to where the pier is about 10 minutes on a nice pace walk.

Thanks folks for all of the info, looking foward to my first flights with Cathay.

Agree with the gate proximity suggestions - unless you want a bath, in which case you should take the time to book a Cabana at the Wing.

What frustrates me about the Pier is the fact that it's not actually all that convenient if you're at a gate in the 40s side of the fork, nor is it particularly close to the transfer area at gate 35. Not a problem if you have a lot of time, but for tighter (1-2 hour) transfers, you lose a lot of time getting to/from the Pier even if you're using a gate that's up in the fork.

On the other hand, the same could be said for the Wing if you're coming/going from gates 10 to 19, but at least it's not far at all from the transfer area.

As an SG travelling in J, Batesy will only have access to the J lounges at HKG. Cabana's are only available in the F lounge at the Wing - for F passengers and OW emeralds.

Thanks dajop, I'm well aware of that - didn't dig deep enough to see that Batesy was no longer WP.

One thing I did learn from your posts is that they can be booked, I've never done that (mind you there is only once I've missed out getting a Cabana so I guess I'm doing OK).

Actually, that's a good point (perhaps relevant to the OP) - either or both of the Wing and the Pier can be extremely packed at various times (I haven't figured out how to predict when these peak periods are).

While it's worth checking out the other if one is busy, if only J lounges are an option (and probably, even if F lounges were in play) that's what makes the QF J (not so much the F) lounge an attractive option, because it is open all day and extremely quiet once the morning QF flights have left. Food options and service are not so bad either, and the showers are pretty nice.

Shame about no baths and no Peninsula chocolate truffles, because that would have really made it stand above the others. ;)

Downstairs area in the Wing can be OK even if upstairs is busy. I go down there before leaving the lounge if I feel like a Coke (upstairs it's post mix - which I hate - downstairs is in cans, small thing I know ) , and it's always been really quiet. I've only been in QF J lounge once (travelling on 3K, but it was before a QF flight, so catering was good), but at SIN, catering in the QF lounges seems rather limited when there isn't a impending QF or BA departure - is that the case in HKG as well?

Not IME - I know what you mean about SIN (at least they offer to make you toasted sandwiches in the F lounge), but in HKG they actually have the full food service topped up - and it's half decent (not a patch on what you'd get at the CX F lounges, but close enough for comfort!).

How do you book one? I am traveling via HKG in Sept. Have looked on CX website but no info available on booking. Is it possible and/or necessary to do it prior to leaving Oz? Thanks

No, you have to do so on arrival at the lounge, a bit like booking a treatment at the QF F lounge spa (unless you're CL or traveling F).

But as dajop mentioned, you'd be relatively unlucky not to be able to get one on short notice.

Thanks, hopefully will get to make use of both ;)
