So while ago at a Korean restaurant in Adelaide I showed Buzzard some pictures of a wire rack I built for myself do which we responded that I should post some pics. Any way I have finally got around to putting some pictures up as requested.

The basic story was I needed a wine rack and Ikea didn’t really create the feel I wanted so with some encouragement from a mate I built it myself.

Very nice!

How did you attach the staves through the centre? 90 degree brackets underneath?

BOth look a little better than some of my cheaper chinese racks that are a flat front with a hole drilled to fit the bottle
(that unfortunately does not fit any of the larger diameter bottles around - about 30% by experience)

Thanks, all the shelves are original timber from the parts of the barrel that was cut out and hence are curved. Each stave/shelf was cut to Jam into the barrel and except for the top one they more or less hold their own weight against the sides of the barrel. I have then put screws in the underside and back to fully secure them. This picture might help.

it was quite a challenge.

It looks nice, if not a little unstable with the bottles able to freely roll?

Yes you have to be a bit careful when you want to take the middle bottle.

Well your Ikea one can at least hold more than 40 bottles.

Indeed. It's never been full but got close a few times before a lot of drinking. I think the particular style we have ended up being discontinued unfortunately. It's bulky and heavy but solid and thanks to a bottle break a few years ago we have a pine/red wine smell all year round ;)

That said, it's not as much a showpiece as yours. Our cellar is in a back room. You're could be on display in a main room.

Smeacs, I like your work. I took this photo when we visited a vineyard in the Douro Valley. Maybe some ideas there-if you can zoom in, at the back on the left there is an open rack & to the right of that is a "swinging door"

Yes it very much is a showpiece although I live in a share house of 5 guys so it doesn't take much to be a showpiece.

That Douro Valley furniture look good.
