Very broad question, but which Hilton property would be best from a general tourist perspective?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

For easy access to Shinjuku and the surrounding area, Hilton Tokyo is very nice and my favourite sushi bar is within walking distance.

I also agree with Shinkz that the Conrad is superb - I just found it to be a little too far out from the main areas I was interested in seeing, although it's so close to the Ginza, walking there was wonderful on a crisp spring morning! Certainly easy enough to grab the train, but I would have preferred to spend more time seeing Tokyo and less time getting to/from the hotel to my starting point.

They have just opened another hotel (refurbished property from a different brand), which I'm informed is nice as well, but further out again from the main areas.

If you want to experience Mickey Mouse and Co. the Hilton Tokyo Disney is definitely something different (you catch the "Mickey Train" connection to get to the hotel, which goes around part of Tokyo Disneyland), but personally I'd give it a miss - the Starbucks in the foyer does a roaring trade for a reason!;)

In Tokyo there are things to see and do just about everywhere. The only criteria I would use is easy access to a JR or subway station.

Although I think Hilton or Conrad Tokyo are better located that Hilton Odaiba. Getting the (light) rail between Shiodome - where the Conrad is - and the Hilton Odaiba each time could be a pain if in Tokyo for longer than just a day or two...

Hilton Tokyo has good location but it's an average hotel IMO and a bit stingy with suite upgrades.

Conrad Tokyo is an impressive hotel, my favourite but can be very expensive. Location not bad, walking distance to Ginza and the fish market, close to subway.

Haven't tried the new Odaiba property yet but if you can get P+P or decent cash rate at Conrad don't think twice and book it, that would be my advice.

As discussed last night - in this context Hilton Tokyo.

Conrad is great, but probably wasted on a mini Swanning_it

Love then Conrad, but the Hilton makes more sense overall for most unless money is no object. It's slightly further to some of the bigger tourist destinations and more costly.

In the Hilton Tokyo I would suggest not using the wifi or wires net with any device with significant personal information. The only common link (among many similar cases) the authorities could find with my recent ID theft seems to be this hotel.

Global advanced comm or similar companies do cheap-ish wifi rental though. Highly recommended.

As others have said, the Conrad is a beautiful hotel but is a little bit out of the way, if you don't mind a short subway ride to get around to the main sites it's a wonderful choice.

The Hilton Tokyo is better located, the rooms are a bit small but if you can get an upgrade to a junior suite the rooms are pretty nice. The lobby does get very busy though and can be pretty chaotic.

Agree with this summary. As a Diamond, I checked in /out at the executive lounge and avoided the lobby scrum :)

I'm going to go against the grain here, I thought the Conrad is well located for first time visitor. But depends on what you are doing. We did a few day trips from Tokyo on our first visit, as well as exploring different parts of Tokyo, with only one visit to the Shinjuku, and found staying in the area near the Conrad excellent. Second time round, staying around Shinjuku was worthwhile. But really either works, both a close enough to Subway, which you need to spend time on it to get around anyway.

Thanks to all for the great comment. I'll look at the Hilton I think, as the Conrad is somewhat more expensive (the stay is for my daughter rather than me) and it would appear both properties have pros and cons with regard to locality.

Sorry for taking so long in replying, but I was pretty busy yesterday and I seemed to have a headache and a mouth that tasted like what I assume the bottom of a coughies cage would taste like, when I awoke yesterday morning. No idea of the cause, but I'm guessing it may have something to do with the previous night being spent with another AFF member who has the tendancy to lead me astray! ;) (and yes, we did end up down at the backpackers end of town!)

Any recent updates on Tokyo Hilton? I saw a couple of old closed threads and one reasonably recent "How do they treat you" post so has anyone been recently?

I noted mention of poor upgrades (it's for my daughter and a friend and for 5 nights so I'm assuming that will likely continue) but does anyone have any info about the breakfast/lounge? I was planning on not exactly lying, but just not telling them I won't be coming. I've booked and added her name as an additional guest, so she can check in, along with the comment "HH benefit, 2nd guest free. Occupancy - 2 adults" and my past experience of Hiltons is they just have a sheet with surname and room number and they just write on it the number attending breakfast, not the actual participants names. What's the general consensus. Is access for her and her friend to breakfast and the exec lounge likely to be a problem?

Any comments on the hotel are welcome as usual.

There will be no problem at check in. I booked Hiltons all over the world (include Tokyo) for my parents and they always got all the benefits. If you wish to make it even easier you can add comment that 2nd guest will check in first, simply because some hotels ask to scan both passports at check in but when they see that comment they know to expect only one guest.

At lounge/breakfast they usually ask surname or room number so again there will be no problem there.
