My first time to LAS and was hoping to get some advice from those who have gone before me!

I'm attending a conference in April and wanted a Hilton Worldwide property relatively close to the Convention Centre. Ideally I want something close, but I also don't want to pay the USD$300 a night the Embassy Suites is after.

My question is whether anyone can recommend the best Hilton property nearby?

If I choose to stay further out, to save $$, is it relatively easy/cheap to hop in a cab and drive the 2/3/4 miles to the Convention centre? Or is it just a hassle and I should pony up the bucks and stay as close as possible?

Having just been to a conference in Vegas, try to get somewhere as close to your venue as you can. I wasn't staying on the strip as my conference wasn't there - I stayed in the same venue. I haven't stayed Hilton there but there is a property near the main conference centre up towards the Stratosphere.

If you are walking to a location on the strip, allow extra time for crossing the roads via bridges (mostly) & detours the paths want you to take.

The only time I used a cab in Vegas was when sharing with others. I used hotel shuttles, the local bus network ($8 for 24 hrs is great value if you catch the bus up & down the strip) & riding with newly found friends at the same conference.

If you get a chance, have a look downtown also, especially at night around Fremont St.

I've only stayed at Hilton Garden Inn LV Strip South, deliberately chosen for being off-strip. Small but nice property, pool, bar, little restaurant, free parking. It is, however a few miles from the strip, so nowhere near the Conv Centre. They do operate a courtesy bus to the bottom of the strip, and also to the airport.

The Deuce Bus erkpod refers to runs quite regularly but our experience was the strip seemed always to be heavily trafficked, hence it made quite slow progress up and down it - so allow plenty of time if using it..

Are you going to NAB? If you to go the NAB show website you can get excellent Hilton rates (amongst others) if you are registered as an exhibition attendee. I should say that the area around the LV Hilton next to the convention centre is rather dull and industrial.

Last year I stayed at "Hilton Grand Vacations on The Strip" for a night for about $70. It was absolutely fine - quite nice, even. No idea why it was so cheap, unless it was because it has no gaming facilities on site. Also no idea if it is close to the Convention Centre - it was close enough to Fashion Show Mall to keep me happy :)

I'm going in April as well, and I've been looking at the revamped Tropicana which is now in the Hilton stable. But I hear great things and not so great things. It is cheap though as a Hilton property and they include breakfast for HH.

Yes I am, will you be attending?

I did see the rates on the NAB website, and they are much better than what I can get at Hilton.com - but I want to make sure it counts towards elite qualification and I'm not sure if I book through NAB that would be the case?

Perhaps I should contact HH and ask them. Ideally I want to stay at the Embassy Suits Convention Centre but that is showing no rooms available online, I could call and get one, but I'm sure the rate is huge!

I'd be happy to stay here. .71 miles from the Convention centre, but that property is showin $219USD per night currently.

The Tropicana has a much more attractive rate, at $111USD per night, I'm just not sure how realistic it is to schlep the 2.71 miles to the Convention centre twice a day!

Yes; taking my wife and son to the show. I've been a couple of times. There are dozens of full-size buses that stop at the main hotels, but the pickup/return times are limited. Last time we just ended up taking the car and parking next to the hall. Are you hiring a car? I like to head off beyond the strip and check out the 'burbs and shopping centres. I have looked at the LV Hilton before but it seems way out of the action, although there will be a lot of exhibit people there.

I should add that last year I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria in New York and booked through the New York Motor Show at a corporate rate. Because of that I couldn't get any HH Diamonds benefits, but I didn't know that and the check-in staff didn't tell me until I figured it out by researching this forum. I kicked up on TripAdvisor and we got upgraded to a corner two-bedroom suite (but no breakfast). I've booked Ballagio and the MGM through the NAB site in previous years.

Nice one. Is the car parking free? I thought there was no longer a LV Hilton?

I was trying to avoid hiring a car, but I guess I could pick one up and stay further out from the Convention Centre - cost may end up being the same I guess.

Any tips for what to see outside of the Strip. I'm doing a MR leaving from LAS but wasn't sure whether to leave immediately after the show (the 11th) or stay an extra day and see any of the sights.

I'm in the mid of a trip & an illustrated trip report including Vegas - see the trip report section.

I liked the non gambling section of New York New York. It actually looks a little like NY. While you're there, check out Zumanity if you like your Cirque du Soleli a little more adult.

As I mentioned earlier, check out downtown Vegas & the Fremont St Experience. Also check out the Container Park downtown - places to shop & eat in a place built out of containers.

Thanks for the tip! I assume then that I should allow at least a day after the conference to try to get around a bit?

If you can, give yourself a day before & a day after. You'll be glad you did.
