Hi,

I need to fly to NZ in a week (Melbourne to Wellington) and take 3 x checked in bags around 22kg each. Which airline is the best value? Air NZ charges $160 for 2 additional bags I think, but all the others I've looked at seem to change by kg which works out quite expensive... I'll be flying in coach

I have no status to help out except virginaustralia silver and star alliance silver which doesn't do anything.

I would certainly ask Virgin Australia what their charges will be. As a Silver your allowances are:
Complimentary Baggage Allowance
  • Allowance of 23kg when travelling with Virgin Australia, Pacific Blue and Polynesian Blue
  • One free extra piece to the specification of the fare class flown when flying to the US with V Australia
  • An additional 10kg when flying to other international destinations with V Australia

Oops.

Qantas do even cheaper prices for pre-purchase excess baggage. But in this case AirNZ still looks like the better option.

According to this webpage. Excess Baggage - New Zealand - Excess Baggage - Baggage - Travelling - Air New Zealand - New Zealand Site It would be NZ$200 total for two extra bags. Which is quite a good deal.

Also with AirNZ you get two bags (23kg per piece) with Works Deluxe deal and three bags (23kg per piece) with Business class. Sometimes AirNZ has a business class sale in the lead up to Christmas. I think that might be your best option.

Another thing to consider is that couriering the bags can also also sometimes work out cheaper and sometimes more convenient. You can get door to door service. You can send them to your hotel.

But I think in this case AirNZ probably the best option.

Yeah AirNZ worked out the cheapest by far.

I called Qantas and they charge by kg, 25kg = $175. Virgin said I would have to book 3 saver/flexi seats to take 3 bags or book premium which allows 69kg, then the operator suggested since they share NZ flights I should just book through the NZ website and pay $160 for two additional bags.

Emirates allow 30kg checked baggage and 7kg cabin bag in Economy. To add another 25kg to make it 62kg in total would cost about $240 (if purchased online, I think)
They only fly MEL-AKL, so maybe not suitable for you.

I would strongly suggest LAN for SYD-AKL at least in Premium Business as they call it. Did this one way, with QF flight back as LAN leaves AKL at 5.30am or something! I did it mostly for the 80 SC to retain silver status - and the price is only $633 for J (compared to QF for $1350 on same date! - this was in Oct. but price is still current). And you get US style 3 x 23kg pieces! (not sure how you carry it all, but will likely use this to the max when I move back to NZ sometime next year). LAN business I had not flown for a while (had done an award flight before and it seemed that you got a cheese tostada in business exactly the same as economy! - it's still a light lunch style but at least you get the full cutlery artillery and reasonable wine etc). Would agree that the burger with the lot Air NZ econo fare also has a very good luggage allowance, so horses for courses.
