I have 15,000 JAL MB points are about to expire (and the airline about to disappear). The Mileage Bank operator suggested I take a domestic flight on partner Qantas.

What destinations would be within a 15,000 point range return of Sydney?
Would anyone recommend topping up with a cash differenceto go somewhere a little further, North Qld or Fiji perhaps?

TIA

As this question is related to JAL miles and not Qantas Frequent Flying Program, I have moved it to the general Airline Loyalty Program forum.

Have you looked at the JAL web site to find an answer to your query?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

As the points are to be spent as Qantas flight I thought this would be best place to post.

No, the QFF forum is for spending Qantas FF points on flights. Redemption of JAL miles on QF flights is nothing to do with the Qantas FF program. You will need to look at the JAL web site and not the Qantas web site for answers to your question.

I have 17K BA Exec Miles I am going to use up at some point. I have no idea if they are 'worth' the same as JAL miles, but regardless, BA's redemption table means that 15k points is a one way economy trip between any two destinations in Australia that QF fly to, regardless of distance. Also taxes are next to nothing - about $15.

I hope JAL's program turns out to be similar for you - makes it much more tempting to go further afield / to a more obscure destination that you otherwise wouldn't visit.

Thanks Newformula. Yes they match to the equivalent of same miles on Qantas. MileageBank told me I could go Brisbane return but I was hoping somewhere more interesting.

I was looking at all kinds of places - SYD-Broome for example had some availability later in the year. All 15k points, just have to pay for the return leg. I say pick somewhere obscure & worth visiting that would otherwise always be relatively expensive in $ on QF, and enjoy!

As I am not a Qantas FF I cannot access to the Qantas site to check it out. Also I think there is a stipulation that the fare be return. Perhaps you can top-up with cash, but still need to know possible destinations. If anyone in the Qantas FF program can let me know where 15k will get me return it would be appreciated.

Even Broken Hill might be more interesting than Brissy.

See post 4.

JAL awards don't exactly line up with QFF awards.

See here and the reward table.

15k JAL miles will let you up to 2,000 miles return in Economy Class. e.g. from SYD, you should be able to fly to anywhere within this circle (assumng a direct flight):

e.g. CBR, MEL, BNE, HBA, ADL, LDH

TSV is just outside this circle at 1047mi oneway.

Some other options are available through connections, e.g DPO.

QF's Route Maps may be useful for you.

futaris, perfect that's the sought of thing I am after. I knew I would get 2000 miles from that chart on the JAL site but knowing how it relates was one of my issues.

The JAL mileage bank rules for QF awards and award chart, you can travel a total of 2,000 miles (return) and include 2 stopovers and 6 flights in your itinerary.

Some examples you could include are:
-either Rockhampton, Mackay, Bundaberg, Charleville with stopovers in Brisbane on the way there or on the wayback, or
- Port Lincoln, with stopover in Adelaide or Melbourne on the way back
- Hobart, Launceston, Devonport or Mildura, with stopover in Melbourne on the way back
- Lord Howe Island

I am sure there are others.

Now this is getting more interesting.

I just checked Norfolk Is. but it is 2086miles return so I guess drop-off will be early.:)

Anyone been to Port Lincoln for a break?
What's Lord Howe like?

Edit: I just found a mileage calculator on the MileageBank site. It's the small print above the Qantas mileage table.

You won't be able to book an award on a QF codeshare (i.e. QF3xx), e.g. SYD-NLK is QF333.

The flight has to be operated by QANTAS (or QantasLink).

NB, according to Wikipedia and this article, flights to Port Lincoln don't commence till 15 Feb.

How do you work out QF333 is a codeshare? I wouldn't know how to tell.

QF001-QF199 are Qantas international Flights on Qantas metal.

QF200-QF399 are Qantas codeshare flights on non Qantas metal.

QF400- ... are Qantas domestic flights, some higher numbers are codeshares.

And just for completeness, QF1600- ... departing Sydney are QantasLink flights that depart from Terminal 2.

And from a redemption point of view QF 5xx_ are QF codeshares operated by Jetstar domestically.

A question, as I'm not 100% sure, but are QF200-299 reserved for Qantas codeshares on Jetstar International?

You take this knowledge very seriously..............I'll have to work hard to try and catch-up.:)
Thanks for the explanations everyone.
