Hi,

I'm planning a trip to New York sometime in May 2010.

Current return ticket prices for SYD-JFK in May 2010 are pretty expensive (up to $3000 with QAN, Delta, or United) compared to current 2009 prices (closer to $1400).

I know my trip is about 8 months away, but can I expect some ticket sale (eg 2-for-1) later this year to closer to the date? Or is this as good as it gets in terms of pricing?

It seems that QAN, Delta, and United have given up on competing for 2010. I guess they're expecting a recovery in passenger numbers next year or so.

Thanks

Generally the "sale" fares are not run for bookings that far ahead. If you look at the SYD-JFK fares in early 2010 they are still fairly cheap, however mid-year is still high. I'd wait until the end of this year or early next year before even thinking about booking.

I booked a $900 SYD-LAX-SYD about two weeks before travel in April this year.

You're aiming too far ahead. Sales for May are likely to turn up in February-March. So, sit back, relax and don't worry about it.
