What's your golden travel rule?

I'm pretty much the complete opposite of that (within reason). Some of my most memorable travel experiences have been through the kindness & hospitality of complete strangers, with no expectation of anything in return.
I’m with DrCam - after my own Single White Female experience where I stayed with a ‘kind’ stranger whom I met traveling I accepted an invitation to stay with her. After her increasingly weird behavior, I fled in the middle of the night running out of the flat at 4am , going to the nearest station and taking the first train to anywhere but there!!

I get that people have different rules and risk tolerances but a hard rule about arriving so early seems a bit unnecessary.
By all means, arrive early if you wish, but say a 9am flight, you're telling me that you're really going to arrive at the airport at 5am?

Who said anything about a 'hard rule' ?
