What's the best way to book a one-way flight for a cruise?

Mr and I are looking at a cruise from Honolulu - Sydney later this year for our honeymoon. I went to our local Cruise About to ask questions. The travel agent was only interested in quoting the Celebrity Solstice and barely talked about the Royal Caribbean ships. I may have opened up the Royal Caribbean app on my phone and told her the current prices..... Guess that shows who pays the higher commissions!

The BNE-HNL one way flights in Y were quoted about $800 each. I will ring the cruise ship reservation line and see what price they can organise flights for.

I've had a quick look at the Qantas, Jetstar and Hawaiian websites.

Besides a points booking can anyone give advice on how they have booked a well priced one way flight with a cruise.

I phoned Royal Caribbean and the best price they could do was Air New Zealand BNE-AKL-HNL for $866.32. That's almost as much as I paid for a return seat on Hawaiian Air last year.

Princess Cruises have a very nice cruise on a very nice ship in September.

This is a 35 day Sydney (SYD) Honolulu (HNL) Sydney.

However they do split it at Honolulu on enquiry.

Hawaiian Airlines (HA) who codeshare with Virgin (VA) seem to be always competitive with price.

You could also check with Princess flight service, known as eZAir, for inclusive price.

Perhaps you would like to consider the reverse leg, HNL to SYD as this is a daylight flight.

Geegeela you are awesome! I've found that cruise online and will suggest it to Mr. I'm thinking a cruise that long we need to book a balcony.

Looking for something similar STA travel seem to be able to price their one way flights at half the price of a return. If you are looking one way it is often better than you can get by booking direct. They sell to people other than students and teachers for slightly more, plus you get the extra travel agent baggage allowance.

Thankyou ronicat. Normally I would run away from the suggestion of STA but since we're very specific on what we need we can see what they come up with.

I booked my flight earlier this week to HNL. Most of the cruises ex-HNL depart around vic School holidays and I noticed that prices with J* jump around that period.

I got a flight with J* as they had a sale recently with a base ticket price of $379 one-way ex MEL direct (was advertised on TV). In total flight came to $510 each after adding Plus Bundle (FF points and meals), 30kg baggage and VOD.

The next closet was AirNZ but if you look carefully, base price no baggage comes in around what RC told you and there is also an overnight stay in AKL that you have to account for as well.

Hawaiian are ex-SYD only of course (ie, VA as well) and they tend to stay above the $1000 mark for the basic fare, though is an O/N flight like J*.

RCL Radiance Balcony HNL-SYD on RCL site comes in at $6910 roughly, Interior Room $4750.
Rhapsody Balcony $6250, Interior $3290/$3390 Large Interior (Go Large)

These are direct off their site and Include Tips (do this)

I can't get much DEAL on Rhapsody, but can get Radience down $1000 on a balcony.

Hawaiian fly out of Brisbane now and allow two bags each so they are a convenient option.

My plan at the end of the cruise is to fly Qantas business class on points back to Brisbane for the two bag allowance.

Missburrill, I am sure you will have a wonderful time on the Princess Cruise.

Balcony or no balcony is ENTIRELY matter of personal choice.

However, for me, I don’t think the extra for a balcony is worth the cost over an unobstructed ocean-view cabin.

The balconies a quite small and reduce the size of the standard cabin.

The Sea Princess is a grand ship of 77,000 tonnes with plenty of uncrowded areas if you want to relax or view from “outside”.

There is a huge amount of experiences available on the ship 24 hours a day and most find they only use the cabin for sleeping and showering.

Having said that I expect that if you have not cruised before in this class of vessel then the allure of your own balcony will be too much to resist.

just as a side note Royal Caribbean and Celebrity are the same company just different brands, the commissions would be the same AFAIK

Your avatar looks really familiar for some reason! ;)

We did a Caribbean cruise onboard Celebrity Summit ex SJU in Nov 2011 & were very happy with everything. The only hassle was who we booked it through (Vacations to Go) as they mucked up our onboard credit. If booking through VTG I would ask for the best possible price without the onboard credits so you don't have to chase them up.

My plan at the end of the cruise is to fly Qantas business class on points back to Brisbane for the two bag allowance.

You'd need to book super early to nail a JASA ex HNL as Hawaii is always a popular destination. What dates are you looking at & how many ff points to you have available with QF? Do you have any on VA that you could redeem on their partner airline HA?

FYI even if you were travelling in whY on QF you'd still get a 2 piece baggage allowance. With JQ it depends what you pay for so you'd need to select that carefully.

NB Cruise About is just another name for Flight Centre similar to Escape Travel, FCM Travel etc etc.

I have a colleague who uses an outfit in Perth to do his bookings (he's about to head off on 3 months of cruising around the globe.) You have to push them.

Darwin or Perth ?

I heard there was some legit DEALS out of Darwin!

Remember that travel agents in the NT don't have to be licenced and there is zero consumer protection by the Travel Compensation Fund as some people found out the hard way.

You could always use a travel agent somewhere else in Australia (ie not in the NT) but start the cruise in Darwin.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
