I realise I'm late to the 'debate' over the news that flights QF1, 2, 9 & 10 will serve only Halal food, but I've noticed the some of the posts over on Qantas's FB page are intolerant to say the least!

I'm trying to work out why these folks are burning QFF cards, promising never to fly QF again, etc, etc? :?:

If QF didn't say anything, I doubt <those complaining> would notice the difference

Some people are against Halal for one reason or another. it isn't hard to understand why Emirates would want this as a condition to the new deal.

Couple of possibilities:
1 is the certification process basically a religous tax.?
2. Is the mandated method of slaughter the best way?

1) No, it's the same as certification that a meal is kosher, fair trade, or even the Heart Foundation tick. Unlike the Heart Foundation, however, the other categories are reliable. The Heart Foundation tick is a sponsorship product that was even licensed to Pizza Haven.

2) Consumers | Halal Australia

It is amazing how much of Australian beef, chicken etc (but not pork) is halal but not labelled as such.

Halal is very wide in the market,

I use to work for a biscuit manufacturer and all of our products where halal as we would also export for some markets at certain times of demand.

As long as the slaughter is done with as little as possible suffering to the animal....and I understand in Australia stunning is accepted.

Would a special request option for "Non-Halal" appease the punters?

Producers of Halal Food (and restaurants serving Halal Food) are catering to a particular market. And they value their custom a bit more than valuing the lost custom (if any) by those who refuse to eat Halal food on whatever grounds.

Good. Because if it is advertised as halal I refuse to eat it.

By gosh, have we got news for you....

There is plenty of food that would be halal despite it not being labelled so.

Devils advocate here ....... let's say Qantas announced that they now only serve free-range eggs - would that raise any hackles? How about if they mandated the use of eggs from battery hens - would that be OK?

If Halal means that animals suffer less when slaughtered then I'm all in favour. If they suffer equally either way then who cares. But if they suffer more then I want the option to NOT choose halal food.

I am generally OK with Halal, but I haven't looked deep enough on the Halal way of slaughtering animals. I prefer the most painless way even though some animal groups said Halal way caused too much suffering to animals. Would like to know more about this.

And if you flew out of Heathrow in the last three years, chances are, you already were served "halaal" food.

World

Time to get those shorts in a bunch, yet again.

The Halal argument goes both ways.
Why won't "they" eat non halal - it's still food fit for human consumption isn't it?
Maybe some people just don't like the halal slaughter method.
Never known anybody to die because they ate halal.... or non halal for that matter.
No wonder there are wars people, we can't even see eye to eye on the food we consume.
