Hello guys - first time poster here. Lately, I've been reading a lot these forums trying to learn ways of maximising my miles and best options of getting status and take advantage of the system.

Even though I've been reading a lot, I got myself in a situation which is not exactly what I wanted and hope someone here could help me turn it around.

From August I'll be doing some long term travel, and I have a booking with Qantas from SYD to SCL, as part of a Rtw ticket, in economy (class O - I know most of you wouldn't touch this but the entire ticket was cheap). The problem here is that the flight to SCL is too long and I would love to upgrade to business somehow - right now I have around 100k points available (Bronze status).

I'm willing to pay a bit more to bring the class a bit higher but I'm afraid that wouldn't guarantee me an upgrade either - so do you guys think upgrading to a higher economy class would be possible/worth it? Or do you see any way I could make my dream of flying business a reality, without having to pay thousands more?

Thanks in advance. If you need any other detail please let me know.

Cheers

Welcome WebDevTraveller,

I'm not sure about upgrading your existing ticket, perhaps converse with QF, though for such a long flight certainly J cabin would be a lot more comforting.
Im finding the EpiQure member options are assisting in providing indulgent inspiration & importantly potentially increasing your points tally, if that's any help.
Cheers,
jl

Firstly check the loadings for the flight and ask about upgrade possibility. see these threads:

Flight Availability/Loadings & Upgrade Probability Help Desk
Seating Availability/Allocation/Configuration Help Desk

You could try changing your flight under manage your booking and see what the cost is to get into an upgradable fare class. Basically go to the booking, click the change option and then see if you can get it to show you options on the same flight. I've not done this myself, so you'll have to experiment. I'm not sure that you have mach chance of an upgrade if you can get into the right fare class. But that's why I recommended those other threads.

Check out credit card bonus points offers as well.

Just remember there is no guarantee you'll get upgraded. Even as a platinum frequent flyer I have had my upgrade requests knocked back around half the time. You could well pay for the extra fare class and get absolutely other to show for it, particularly since you are bronze. I'd spend my money on better hotels, and see the doctor for some sleeping pills. Amazing how flights in Y fly past when you're dead to the world.
