Hi community.
I have just joined this community as my husband and I received 200,000 Velocity Points when we purchased our home through Westpac.
Does anyone know the best way to utilise these points?
I have researched for days and I’m left feeling quite confused. We were thinking about purchasing seats and then upgrading with our points but apparently only gold members and above can do this.
Any suggestions or ideas will be gratefully received.
Cheers.

Hi @Bellamour

I have just joined this community

Welcome to AFF :)

my husband and I received 200,000 Velocity Points when we purchased our home through Westpac.

Wow :) Congratulations on your home :)

I've always believed that he best way to use points is to use them on international flights (long haul preferred) on an upgrade to a higher cabin or purchasing a seat in the upper cabin via reward seats.

You may try and find seats in premium cabins and use points or points + pay to purchase those seats.

Mind that any seats purchased as reward seats won't attract any SC or points, however, seats purchased via points + pay do

but apparently only gold members and above can do this.

I'm not too sure about this. Someone can clarify :)

Congrats on the new home! I just used approx 240K VA points (transferred them to KrisFlyer) to get a reward business class return flights to South Africa (I wanted to go via Singapore/didnt want to fly SA airlines via Perth).

Importantly, dont let them expire so what other ways are you earning Velocity points? Hubby and I earn 4K points per month via eReward surveys. We also earn points by going via the Velocity site for ebay, chemist, Bing Lee, Catch, Myer ect purchases. I also earn Flybuy points via Coles and when theres a bonus deal on, transfer them to Velocity.

Build on the 200K points you currently have and plan a holiday! Not a Sydney-Melb flight but somewhere OS

Cheers and welcome, stick around!

Edit: For LAX route, only Gold and Platinum can use points to upgrade with VA. Ive found best use of them with scoring reward long haul flights to Europe or LAX. Flown Ethihad on points to UK but the taxes are a lot. SQ to Europe this year was on points as well.

Congratulations on entering the housing market. Just remember that you now have a significant amount that you owe to Westpac AND they have that house as security.

"Using" the free 200K points will require to to spend additional money on airport fees, hotels, taxies, activities etc plus time off work. Activities which reduce the rate at which you can repay Westpac.

How about finding someone in your family to whom you can transfer the points and they can give you some cash which you apply to the loan.
