What to do when Jetstar downgrades a Classic Reward booking

Last May my partner and I were downgraded from J on CR bookings on 2 flights SYD-DPS and DPS-SYD some weeks before departure due to aircraft changes (no J on Neo) - which I only discovered looking at seat maps, we were still noted as J in QF App, QF/JQ webpages etc.

We called Qantas but as NB’s they said the only thing we could do to get back the lost points difference was cancel our J bookings and rebook Y bookings. Unfortunately as we were already out of pocket 120K or so points from the year prior for a covid cancelled J CR flight they never returned points for (after many calls), we were worried that might happen again, so in the end we just wore it.

The departing leg was fine. We were delayed 6hrs (yuck) but were given access to QFJ lounge (perk for an NB!) and the staff there were lovely even bringing over an apology fruit platter at one stage, and on the flight cabin crew offered us plenty of vouchers to buy food and drinks so we weren’t out of pocket.

The hard plastic Y seats were a nightmare for my wheelchair bound v tall partner who was stuck with his legs jammed into the seats in front for the entire flight.

On the return journey we were offered nothing at all. It was truely one of the worst flights we’ve had. We were on J tickets in Y and they wouldn’t so much a provide a bottle of water.

This is all to say, we have once again booked a JQ J CR flight, DPS to SYD, for later this year, and I just wanted to ask, what would you do if this happened to you? Would love to know so should it happen again we’d know what to do, as I’m still feeling a bit bummed about the whole debacle nearly a year later.

Any advice much appreciated!

*We would have booked QF if we could have but all CR flights were been snapped up before we’d gotten access as NB’s.

We called Qantas but as NB’s they said that we couldn't access a competent call centre, the only thing that they were capable of doing was to could do to get back the lost points difference was cancel our J bookings and rebook Y bookings.

Corrected that for you. That's perhaps what they meant.

If I recall correctly, this issue was first raised last year when the equipment swaps started… replacing 787 services with the all-economy a321s.

I thought the recovery was to provide Jetstar business ticket holders with emergency exit seats, and all the trimmings such as free food.

it might be that your partner, being in a wheelchair, couldn’t be given access to the exit row seating. The flight back however should have given you the extras such as free food. But given the length of time since the swaps happened, maybe there aren’t many affected pax left, so they’ve forgotten in DPS.

You should be able to get a refund of the points difference. Send an email to qantas frequent flyer. State you had a J award but were downgraded with an equipment swap to economy.

Thank you @MEL_Traveller this sounds like the same situation you’re talking about as it happened in May last year, though I wasn’t a member here yet, and as I’m getting into the amazing posts here I’m seeing we probably had more rights to compensation (points difference) than I thought. Will follow up with an email as you suggest, thanks for the advice!

Hoping it won’t happen again, but I think if it does thanks to this forum I won’t feel so powerless next time!
