HI
we have a family holiday coming up (2 kids, 8 and 5yrs) in June, with 5hrs between flights in HK en route to Europe.

does anyone have any suggestions as to what we can do to pass the time?
(no lounge access as flying QF and I am only PS).

thanks

With 5hrs, and assuming you don't have any major baggage to carry around - I would suggest
1) Catching the Airport express into Hong Kong station
2) Then perhaps walk out to the ferry piers and catch the star ferry across to Kowloon side
3) Walk along the harbour there, you get a good view back towards Hong Kong Island
4) Return on the ferry and Airport Express back to HKG

Time planning wise.

Out and back on the airport express takes nearly an hour.
Leaving airport and getting back in takes an hour. (probably more if you're at a far gate)
Boarding 30 min before departure.

Leaves you 2.5 hours to get to where you want to go, with 2 kids in tow.

i'd be tempted to just stay in the airport!

Take a cab to citi gate outlet malls for shopping or the cable car to big Buddha in lantau (5 mims from airport)

The two young ones I'd be worried about.

They don't walk as fast as you and you'd spend more time minding them as trains and check in are crowded places.

Less stressful staying put if I were you.

Adults only, no problem !

The more I think about it, I'm tending to agree that perhaps staying put is best, the little ones may want to stretch out a bit, but the rush of moving about might be too much, especially the younger one.

They will have to move from the arrivals area upto departures, but from there you cannot leave the airport.

When will you be arriving and leaving.

Do the train ride into town and have a bit of a wonder around but it is not that much time that you will be able to do much shopping.

IMHO I would allow and hour each way for travel.

I would stay put as you have 2 kids.

You will need time to clear customs both sides as well plus make sure you are ready for boarding. Rushing onto plane just as boarding is nearly finished with kids in tow is not good. Have done it once and can end in tears and a stressful flight.

Just adults I would do it but kids and it can all go pear shape.

THere's PLENTY of room to stretch out at hongkong airport. It's big and open.
They will probably like the shuttle that takes you from one side of the terminal to the other.
and then taking the travelator back, and you can do it all over again! That will kill a lot of time.

Heaps of food options in the airport too.
