I have a flight JFK-SYD QF 108 on friday 16th and have applied for a points upgrade from J to F (I am WP). I can see a seat map that to me looks promising but am far from knowledgeable in these matters. So I am looking for opinions from those that know.

Thanks in advance.

The yeild management people look at the flight inside the last 24 hours before departure and decide who will be getting an upgrade.

So, offering up points in exchange for an upgrade will put you in a good position, but people who pay the big bucks and sit up the front don't normally book until the last minute.

Glad I could be of no help in offering an opinion.

Dragonman, my impression is that J is usually overbooked, and as you know F will be cut from JFK - LAX very shortly, so you might be OK there. While there are only 12 seats in F, they very rarely sell. While not on the same route, I've upgraded twice HKG - SYD from J to F only a week and a bit out and they've always come through.

Best to check on QFF to check your points balance about 25 hrs out, and also www.checkmytrip.com as the upgrade will show there as well.

Hope it comes through, as Mr & Mrs Tooner and the 3 little Tooners will be on that flight, but will not, of course be in luxurious J; try Row 52 in whY!:(.

It is showing F7 A7 J9 C0 D0 I0 on expertflyer.

To me that means a fairly full J section and fairly empty F section. Assuming you put in your request fairly early I would be confident of an upgrade...

Just tying up a loose thread ... Upgrade never came through. Ground staff at jfk were pretty ordinary. When checking in at jfk for flight to syd I was only issued jfk-lax. By the time I noticed they had somehow given away my seat lax-syd. I did manage to get a seat albeit a different one.

The BA lounge was packed in F. standing room only and the OW lounge at lax the same. The product was good on the flights themselves.

Sorry to hear that Dragonman, although the flight was absolutely chockers from what I saw. Did you check in at the F counters at JFK - we did and the guy that checked us in was very helpful and even told us to head up to the lounge via the BA side door:cool:. We didn't go into the F lounge (didn't want to push it in a BA lounge with the little Tooners) and the Terraces lounge was chockers as well. We didn't get to the lounge in LAX this time as we met people coming down for our flight and assumed we'd be heading out to the gate soon - turned out to be 45 minutes later:evil:

I agree on the plane being a good one - much newer than on the flight over. Not sure if I would have been happy being one of the 20 - 50 people who had no AVOD though:shock:

Should have checked in at the F desk - checked in at J desk instead. I did find the BA side door. If you thought the terraces was chockers the Flounge was standing room only! Just as well the AVOD worked - they all seemed to be working upstairs. The bussing to/from the plane at LAX was painful.

The bussing to/from the plane at LAX was painful.

I wonder how often that happens in LAX? was it because of the supercalifragilistic volcano stranding aircraft there (I remember passing a VS A340-800 on the way to the QF flight)? The QF folk seemed to be at a complete loss about what to do and told everyone to wait near gate 112 to be bussed back to the plane. Apparently the Lounge staff were also telling people to get down there too.

Anyone else been at the far flung gates on a QF flight?

Yup, on LAX-BNE perhaps in about 2006? Yes, thinking about it, it was late Jan/early Feb 2006, before I had QP membership. We were bussed from the gate at TBIT to one of those far-flung gates.
Have also arrived at those gates at least once. It might have been on a BNE-LAX flight in Oct 2007 that was delayed 4-5 hours, so we probably missed our gate.

So I've been through those gates at least twice.

I read this from the AA website. Any chance that QF might be impacted somewhat?

Los Angeles, CA (LAX) - due to taxi way repairs at LAX, some AA aircraft will be arriving and departing from a remote area. Passengers will be bused between the aircraft and the terminal.
