Webjet is introducing ‘mystery airfares’, a concept that has worked very well for hotel rooms sold through accommodation websites such as Lastminute and wotif. Under the concept, airlines can push mystery discount deals to consumers without revealing their identity until the booking confirmation window appears. Brands and safety records matter a lot more in aviation than accommodation so be interesting to see how it goes.

I'll comment further when I have looked at the web site.

So the days of mystery flights are back? Or you just won't know which carrier is taking you and/or what time you'll be flying?

So if the fare happens to be on QF, do we get SC and FF points as per the QFF program? Or are they going to be booked into a class that doesn't get SC/FF points?

The way it works on Lastminute is you find a deal (so in this case would probably be the cheapest flight from the city you are departing to the city you are arriving at) and then you book it. They send you an email confirming your booking that reveals the details of the hotel you are staying at.

Applying that to the flights:
You don't know who you are flying with or what time it is leaving until they send you an email confirming that you have made the booking.

If you book with Tiger then you would know the 'who are you flying with' bit but the rest would appear to be the same :!:

If I go to the Webjet web site it is a mystery on how to find the 'Mystery Flights' :!:

I can find the article without problem.

basic: I read on travel trends that Webjet was introducing mystery airfares. I had a look at the site but can't seem to find any information. Is that because the mystery airfares aren't true or they just aren't available yet?

Support: At this stage they are testing it on our New Zealand site before we launch it on our main site, the Australian one. We do not have an ETA as yet.

This seems like a bizarre criticism of the idea to me. How it goes will be more likely determined by how well it is implemented, what seats airlines actually make available for the promotion and so on.

The last time I looked on Webjet for trips to NZ, I was pretty confident I worked out which airline it is.

They list the time of the flight, all you have to do was find the flight that is leaving at the same time. From what I remember, the carrier was Emirates on two occassions. It was about ~$10 cheaper if I recall.
