Visiting Australia in December

Welcome to AFF.

Some more info about your plans for Australia would help to get a response. I'm not sure you realise how big Australia is.

What are you interested in?

A lot of tourists want to see the Barrier Reef up in Queensland. The weather up there is likely to be wet in January. Personally I wouldn't go in January.

If you like tennis, the Australian Open starts in Melbourne on 16 January. If you like cricket, January is a good time to visit as there are lots of matches everywhere. There is a Test match in Sydney starting on 4 January (Aust v RSA).

The Sydney Festival is on in January - Google the website for events. Sydney has good beaches too.

If you like wine you could visit the Hunter Valley easily enough from Sydney, and there are famous wine districts in most other states too (except Queensland).

In terms of domestic airlines, Jetstar is 'cheap and cheerful', Virgin is ok and Qantas is likely to be the most expensive. Rex also has a domestic network of sorts but is much smaller.

Thank you for replying, I want to see Sydney opera house and Ayers rock and would like to see some of the caves with the paintings was wondering if I could book a tour?

Sydney Opera House, easy. You might see it before you even land. Or when you land, get straight on the train to Circular Quay and there you are.

Uluru (formerly known to white people as Ayers Rock) - you will need to book a domestic flight. I think the airport is still known as Ayers Rock (don't book to Alice Springs, it is the wrong airport for Uluru). It will be stinking hot in January as it is in the desert. Most activities will start at sunrise (think a time starting with 4 😱) and by lunchtime everyone will be resting in their aircon accommodation until sunset, probably watching the cricket or tennis on tv. You can't climb Uluru as it is a sacred site. But definitely worth seeing. And the 'dinner in the desert' is a brilliant experience - not sure what it's actually called.

As to cave paintings can you be more specific about which ones you want to see? Some are very remote and would be very expensive to get to. I am not sure if there are any in the vicinity of Uluru or Alice Springs but if there are then I am sure there are tours. Maybe have a look at northernterritory.com for info.

For late December in Sydney you need to get your accommodation booked now as there will be very high demand.

Hi Anna,

Thank you for the info, I have got a hotel in Sydney I will have a look in to the things you mentioned and it will really help me thanks again.
Think I have a chance of planning a few trips.

some of the caves with the paintings

I had a quick look at google today for 'indigenous rock art Blue Mountains' and there seems to be quite a bit. The advantage of it being in the Blue Mountains is that it's an easy day trip from Sydney either taking the train or taking an organised tour. Plus in January the weather in the Sydney area will be much nicer than it will be in the desert.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your trip!
