Long time lurker, first time poster here.

I am planning on flying to India using cheap airfares from JQ & MH.
If I get a JQ ticket from SYD - KUL & a MH ticket from KUL-MAA.

1. Will I need a visa to Malaysia (i hold an Indian passport) or can I transit from Airside.
2. If I have checked in bags, can I check them to my final destination from SYD?
3. If 2 is not possible, can I claim my bags at KUL and check back in for the MAA flight without needing a Visa.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Don't know. You will need to check with the Malaysian Consulate/Embassy.

Jetstar does not provide baggage interlining for flights to KUL. See their web site for details. So you will need to collect bags at KUL and re-check with MH. Baggage collection is after immigration, so you need to entry Malaysia to collect you bags.
3. If 2 is not possible, can I claim my bags at KUL and check back in for the MAA flight without needing a Visa.
You will need appropriate authority to enter Malaysia in order to collect bags and re-check at MH. So if you need a Visa to entry Malaysia, then you will need a visa to make the connection. I am not aware of visa requirements for Indian passport holders in Malaysia.

Here's the visa info provided on the QF website

Indian citizen, travelling from Australia to India, transiting Malaysia.

"Visa not required provided continuing to a third country without leaving the airport transit area.

However, transit visa can be issued upon arrival for a stay of
max. 120 hours (extension not possible) if:
- passenger arrives and departs from the same point and not
through any other points;
- holding confirmed onward ticket and all documents required for next destination."
