I’m flying from Sydney to Singapore via Jakarta airport (CGK). My layover is 3 hours and I’ll have to change terminals, does anyone know if I need a transit visa?

If I do need one, how do I go about it? Do I need to do it in advance or is it an 'on-arrival' visa? I've heard that visa on arrival can be a bit risky / that it's safer to get a visa in advance, does anyone have any experience with this?

I've spent ages researching online but can't seem to find a conclusive answer!

Thank you

OP, if you’re flying International to International you shouldn’t be changing terminals. CGK terminal 3 is the international terminal so your inbound flight from SYD should arrive there and the departure to SIN should also be there.

I take that back, it appears from about May this year that part of terminal 2 (terminal 2F) has been dedicated to international flights as well, mostly LCCs such as Jetstar Asia, Air Asia and even Scoot.

You definitely need a visa to enter Indonesia, which you will have to do to transit terminals. As per the other threads you can get one on arrival or you can organise it beforehand and there is no difference in cost. Is your travel all one booking or split between two separate bookings? If the latter, definitely better to have it done beforehand as it is one less chance of delay when arriving into CGK terminal 3. It has taken me anything between 5 minutes to an hour to get through passport control at T3. If you have checked luggage that is usually the longest hold up, with a wait of 40 minutes about normal.

Once you get bags, go through customs and show them the QR code for your declaration. You can do it online up to two days before arrival: Official Website Direktorat Jenderal Bea dan Cukai

Then go up to the inter-terminal shuttle train and get to terminal 2F (you said you have to change terminals so I assume you’re going T3-T2F?)
