I was on VA870 from Sydney to Melbourne yesterday afternoon. Around lunchtime I got a text from VirginAust that said "Virgin Australia regrets to advise changes to VA870 on 10 Jul. We have re-booked you on VA872... "

I also received an email titled "Flight Change Notification" which said I had been re-booked on a new flight, but did not say the original flight was cancelled, just that "We regret to advise changes to your Virgin Australia flight"

I assumed my original flight was just overbooked. It was only once I got to the airport I saw that it had actually been cancelled.

No doubt some market research has informed that the word "cancelled" gives negative connotations.

However I'm pretty sure most people understand what that means and would snigger at the word play.

Of course, it could've been heavily delayed then cancelled in the interim...

Not only VA.
Air NZ is the same.
They gild the lily so to speak.
Not to use antagonistic or apologistic terms I guess is the idea.
