An announcement has just been posted to the ASX detailing the fuel price iniatives. http://www.asx.com.au/asxpdf/20080718/pdf/31b7g4371vb601.pdf

A baggage fee of $8 will be introduced with an increased allowance of 23kg, there will be no baggage fees on flexibile fares. Silver Velocity members will get 23kg free of charge and Gold members 32kg free of charge.

Fares of a number of routes will be cut by up to $20 and flexible fares will rise on some routes.

The baggage charges seem pretty decent compared to $10 for 20kg with Jetstar or $15 for 20kg with Tiger.

The Age reports fares going up!

Virgin Blue will axe more flights and raise fees in order to help it cope with the rising price of fuel.

The second largest Australian airline said it will raise the price on half of its most popular flights by 5% and will introduce a new $8 flat fee for baggage over 23 kilos on all discount fares.

The airline also said it will remove two Boeing 737s from service over Australia in order to save money, cutting capacity by an additional 3%.

Raeding the DJ announcement, though, the $20 is on a new class called "GO fares", but the baggage allowance changes might take some of the advantage out.

$8 + $8 a kilo over 23 kg could catch a few people. But for the Velocity members of status, looks like that can help.

Some what related to DJ's $$ troubles Pac Blue staff in limbo over jobs on the other side of the Tasman

Many of 200 Pacific Blue cabin crew and pilots fear they will not be rehired by the airline after August 19.
That is because it terminated the services of their contractor, Kaiapoi-based Contract Air Services, yesterday from that date

New Age carrier? Too sneaky and it will catch a lot of people who are not frequent flyers and do not read the terms and conditions in detail. And I bet they will be advertising the leadin airfare without the add-on checked luggage fee....
