Oven blamed for mid-flight smoke scare

Megan Levy

February 25, 2011 - 9:19AM

Emergency services were called to Melbourne Airport this morning after smoke was detected in the cabin of a Virgin flight from Brisbane.
Fourteen fire crews were called to Tullamarine about 7.50am after a problem was reported on board flight DJ302 from Brisbane, which was due to land in Melbourne at 8.05am.
A Virgin spokeswoman said the flight with 160 people on board landed safely at 8.10am, and was escorted along the runway by fire engines.

The smoke is believed to have come from an oven in the galley, she said.
‘‘On its descent to Melbourne there was a smoke odour reported by the cabin crew coming from the galley. Some passengers reported smelling the smoke as well,’’ the spokeswoman said.
‘‘We have removed the oven from the plane to determine what happened.’’

DJ: Oven blamed, move along.

QF: FORGET THE EARTHQUAKE! OVERSEAS MAINTENANCE etc etc

ABC News has updated the story- 6 Passengers treated for affects of smoke, plane landed without incident, oven removed from aircraft..

Edited to add: Despite the fact that this happened at 8am the story is yet to appear on News Ltd website.

Why a crime scene?

The police are investigating potential sabotage... given the source of the storey I would think that the area has been taped off to keep people away for OHS reasons.

Or maybe QF have brought in some 'people' to 'assist' them in denting DJ's image:lol:

Perhaps one of the FA's doesn't like their new uniform and took their frustrations out on a defenceless oven:p:mrgreen::mrgreen:
Cheers

It is not unheard of an oven to short circuit aboard a plane, so to me unless there is something that has not been mentioned, it seems odd that it is considered a crime scene...
