The Qantas Group today welcomed a new partnership structure to strengthen and grow the Vietnam-based low fares carrier, Jetstar Pacific.
Vietnam Airlines will take the majority share in Jetstar Pacific, currently held by the Vietnamese State Capital Investment Corporation (SCIC).
Separately, the Qantas Group’s existing 27 per cent share in Jetstar Pacific has now increased to 30 per cent in-line with long-term commitments.

An interesting development. I note Vietnam Airlines is a member of SkyTeam but also allows crediting to AsiaMiles, so I wonder what impact this new investor will have on the FF earning potential of Jetstar Pacific?

What I thought was interesting in the way this article was the presentation of Jetstar Pacific as a Qantas' 'low cost offshoot', like it was wholly owned (or even majority owned). Maybe I'm not big on the correct terminology but I would have thought it would be clearer if they'd put Qantas' investment in low cost carrier J* Pacific. Or does it just leave the door open to slam Qantas when something goes wrong with it?

Maybe Jetstar Pacific:Vietnam Airlines as Jetstar:Qantas? Maybe when travelling on "Plus" fares it will be possible to earn "Golden Lotus Plus" miles? Can't see the change from 27% to 30% bringing the ability to earn QFF points.

What the deal may do is reduce some of the obstacles to launching international services from Vietnam, and wouldn't be surprised if, to start with, current JQ and even 3K services to Vietnam (eg DRW-SGN) are replaced by BL services. Or new routes are opened to places like BKK. Would be neat to see a SIN-DAD route, not sure if that will happen though.
