Victorian Government pledges Rail Link to MEL

If I lived in Victoria, I don't think that my vote would be swayed by any pledges to build that rail line.

From link above .Premier Denis Napthine promises Melbourne airport rail link
The 25-minute train ride will go from Southern Cross station direct to the airport offering an affordable services every 10 minutes during peak times, the state government says. The electric train service will use the existing Albion and Jacana rail corridor.‘‘This is an enormous step forward for Melbourne airport, for Melbourne and Victoria,’’ Dr Napthine later told reporters.
If the ticket price is not just a standard Myki ticket doomed to fail IMHO. Southern Cross is not a destination, just a transit point. The people who live at Southern Cross area (druggies & the like) do not go to the airport.

Southern Cross will be ok. Just a platform change to get round the city (or short taxi) and VLine runs from there.

I'm sceptical - probably be dead by the time it's finished (or started :-|). Well and truly overdue.

A politician promising a MEL rail link? Meh.

I note it is still dependant on the rail tunnel being built. An easy promise to make with a massive escape clause.

What happened to building another level in the loop?

Would the operator of the train become MTM (or whoever has the Melbourne Urban train contract when any line opens)?
Is the current Skybus set up a contract with the state government like the other bus and train services in/around Melbourne?

It's just a stretch to believe this journey can be done via existing network through Albion corridor in 25 mins, without being caught up behind Sunbury trains, or moving onto new regional rail link lines, which would sort of defeat the purpose of the project to give clear paths into the city for Vline services ...

The last time this topic came up, weren't they planning to upgrade and make use of existing fright lines?

Wow how time flies, can't believe it has been four years since the former Liberal leader was talking about a train link to Avalon. Where does the time go?

maybe the same place all those airlines flying out of AVV decide to go ...

And the planned route would mean that people from the west would need to go into town to catch a train running back along the same line they just travelled on!

Just finish the existing spur line from Sunshine to the current near airport location. could done in a few months. Maybe even in time for the election.

It should stop at least at Footscray, Sunshine and North Melbourne.

Yes, current freight line that runs from Broadmeadows (Jacana) to Albion, then feed into existing suburban network (which will have more capacity once the Vline trains move across to the regional link). Although not as simple as just building the extra section to the airport. I believe this line has two tracks - one broad gauge and one standard gauge. So will need conversion of standard gauge to (I guess) dual gauge tracks and electrification of the line + construction of spur to airport. Should only take about 5 years ;)

I almost don't care how it's done. Just build the darn thing already so I can complain how cough/slow/expensive it is...

In China, they'd have it built by the election.

And they don't even have elections!

Article say the line will be...
terminating at a new elevated station at Melbourne Airport
What happened to the existing basement that is ready for a rail link?
