VICTORIA is attracting more overnight international visitors than the rest of the country with 30 per cent of tourists coming to state in 2009.
A Tourism Research Australia's International Visitor Survey showed Victoria's tourism industry was outperforming every Australian state with the number of overnight visitors increasing by 3.5 per cent, compared to the national average of 0.2 per cent.
"When you consider all that Victoria went through in 2009 with the devastating Black Saturday bushfires, swine flu and on top of the global financial crisis, these figures are truly remarkable," Victoria's Tourism and Major Events Minister Tim Holding said.
"While many other parts of Australia have seen a downturn in tourism, Victoria is attracting more people from overseas, who are spending more and staying longer.''
................
INTERNATIONAL overnight visitors to Victoria grew 3.5 per cent well up on the national average up 0.2 per cent, Queensland down 4.0 per cent, and New South Wales down 2.1 per cent.
SOME of Victoria's biggest increases were from Malaysia up 38.1 per cent, India up 26.1 per cent, Singapore up 10.1 per cent.
INTERNATIONAL overnight visitors contributed $3.8 billion to Victoria's economy for the year, a 9.1 per cent increase on the previous year.

Yet still the QF group seems to give everything to Sydney in regards to extra seats and new destinations. When will MEL finally get something?!!
But good job for Victoria being the number 1 destination for tourists.:p

Unlike many QF dont trust what they read in the press, they rely on their own figures. If you have a look at the latest overseas visitor data 52% visited NSW, 39% QLD and 29% visited VIC.

In terms of visitor nights, NSW had 34%, QLD 23% and Vic 22% for the year ended Sept 2009 which is the latest data. Sure VIC has had good growth but in terms of actual numbers, they are coming third, methinks QLD needs to be looked after better than Vic if we are going to use those stats, after all at least you have the A380 with two airlines!

Lol yes.. I just want more QF services to places instead of going via SYD!!! ;)

Be careful what you wish for, QF do have an increasing pool of available 763's

Better that than the older 738's I say. I still refuse to fly a 738 from SYD/MEL to PER (never seem to see the 332's on MEL-PER so I end up on the 763's).

The stats in the herald sun do not contradict what you are saying - just warped by poor subediting (as usual for nonews). To say Victoria is attracting more visitors than other states is wrong - but it is increasing the number of visitors to the state faster than other states.

And really who cares whether QF serve Melbourne adequately or not, it is clear that non Australian airlines do provide a good service to MEL (sometimes all it takes to see the light - so to speak is to switch to the dark side aka *), and the huge increase in visitors from Malaysia is probably entirely due to the entry of Air Asia X into MEL - double daily.

Good to see the Victorian Tourism minister is so good at maths.Hint-the lower the starting number, the higher the percentage increase you get for any given actual number of increased visitors.
A bit like the newspapers stories about the increase in the ANZ job adds from January to february and saying that meant everything is now rosy. The fact that there were less job adds in Feb 2010 than Feb2009 didnt seem to be important.

Agree, combined with MAS price war on the Kul-> Mel route.

Would expect the Sydney #'s will rocket when they eventually start the Kul -> Syd route.

Melbourne's a lovely place...

It's just a pity it's so far out of town.

Ahhh there's nothing more satisfying than the ire of an indignant Victorian!

(Mrs Warks and I love Melbourne, we go there for our wedding anniversary each year)

Actually, I'm a sandgroper that lived in Sydney for 4 years and have lived in Melbourne for slightly longer than 4 years. 3 1/2 years of living in Sydney was spent trying to move back to Melbourne. I just prefer it here:) (and hey each to their own of course - Sydney did have some good points:))

The only reasons I wouldn't go to Melbourne to live are the slightly longer and colder winter and the obsession with AFL. I don't mind the game it's the endless talking about it all the time, 12 months of the year.

Melbourne CBD is way better than central Sydney, lucky we have the harbour to distract attention from it!

:D

I can relate, native Victorian who lived in Sydney for 4 years, but only spend the last 2 months trying to move back. My preference - Sydney weekends during the day, but Melbourne during the week and on weekends at night time:). Oh now living in Singapore, believe it or not the thing I really miss about Melbourne is the weather.

That wouldn't have anything to do with QF (& others) concentrating flights to/from Syd.

"lies, damned lies & statistics"

I am pretty sure that the 738's are newer than the 763's.

Many years ago a Qantas rep attended a Melb Tourism Assoc meeting to tell us that the reason there were no direct MEL/LAX flights was that we didn't want them! After the howls of protest subsided, he agreed that perhaps they had been wrong. The first direct service started some months later (well via HNL in those days).
