I flew a JASA status run Syd-Cbr and return on Sunday morning.

Both flights 717.

The first flight I was the only passenger in business (ticket purchased 36 hours before making final use of my DSC) and about 15-20 passengers in Y.

Return leg had 8 people in J and a few more in Y so I imagine it was quite profitable

Also during the start and end of Parliament sitting, QF would run a few 767's on this route and they were always heavily loaded!

QF804, yes usually pretty full on the MEL-CBR trip... The CBR-MEL trip QF811 however is my preferred flight to take to MEL if possible since it is usually pretty much empty...

All the uni students would use tiger, the timing of the flights were pretty good.

Uni students are happy to go cheap and nasty( CHEAP being the big selling point). Delays etc are an exceptable risk and there is always the chance of some form of compensation even from Tiger if there is a delay. I presume you're not a uni student!
