Sorry to ask a silly question, but as a relative newbie to VelocityFF, I figured someone here could answer this question for me...

I am flying to HKG and am keen to fly with SQ in business. Prices on the SQ website are cheaper than VA and so I was thinking of booking through the SQ website but credit to Velocity. All the flights are VA codeshares.

I figure the SC earn will be the same, but if I book through SQ, will the points earn be according to the SQ partner rate or the VA rate (as its a codeshare)

Appreciate any advice to maximise the points and SC earn

You will earn points according to the table matching the marketing airline, i.e. the airline whose flight number appears on your ticket.

A little lingo:
  • Marketing carrier is the one who has the flight number on your ticket.
  • Operating carrier is the one who actually operates the aircraft which you will fly on (also known as "the metal").

It doesn't matter who you book through; with very little exception all that matters is whose flight number appears on your ticket. Look up the Velocity earn table corresponding to that carrier.

One thing to keep in mind, if you are looking to accrue VA flight sectors for VA status purposes, you should book via the VA web site using VA flight numbers. Booking on the SQ web site will only give you points and status credits but the flight sectors won't count towards the status qualification requirement.

I flew SYD-SIN-HKG-SIN-SYD back in October on a VA booked ticket with VA flight numbers and got credited for points, status credits and flight sectors.

Sort of related question.

I have been looking at BNE-CNX for September/October on SQ website and prices out to ~AUD1122 for 50% miles or ~AUD1172 for 100% miles. That airfare is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. Looked at VA website for VA codeshares and airfare is ~AUD1190.

The planned routing is BNE-MEL-SIN-CNX followed by CNX-SIN-ADL-BNE. Now here is the kicker. I calculate I would earn 120 SCs and based on GCM I would earn ~10071 Velocity points taking into consideration only 50% earn on international legs. The downside is SQ A330's in economy? Can you purchase SQ exit rows on VA codeshare?

Also if SQ comes out with a sale are the sale airfares usually reflected on VA website?

Thanks Qantas for taking away my ability to pre-select bulkhead. Oh and I tried using Qantas points for this trip and it was a no go.

I wasnt able to purchase SQ exit rows online on a VA codeshare previously, might be possible over the phone?

Would it possibly be cheaper to travel to BKK then pick up a separate fare to CNX? Not sure if they still do the 'locals' pricing for airfares in Thailand which can be even less for domestic.

The domestic flights are really cheap with superior service to our non-QF domestic.

I just purchased CNX-BKK for 2 people for total of 3290 baht or ~AUD120 and BKK-CNX for 1 person for 1645 baht or ~AUD60.

On VA website BNE-BKK is almost same price as BNE-CNX but adds extra leg.

The thing that caught my eye was the cheap SCs for status.

I can't comment on reserving exit rows, but SQ coded flights are great for "cheap" full economy status credits in Velocity. In the example above, the 50% miles (sweet deal) earns as discount economy where as the 100% miles (flexi) earns as full economy. Well worth the extra $50.00 and probably much better than the comparable VA coded fare. Unless you need the VA sectors for requalification, I would be booking direct with SQ.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Also, the title of this thread surprises me. I would not have thought Singapore Airlines would offer a VA coded flight on their metal...

Interesting. Don't need the sectors as I use VA for some domestic.

So booking SQ coded flights my calculation becomes 180 SCs and ability to purchase exit rows. Where are those specials when you need them. :p

Another nail in the coffin.

If you book with VA and have status you get your status bonus so something to think about.

For me with plat it can be worth the 100% bonus to pay the small price difference.

Can you purchase SQ exit rows on VA codeshare?

People have been known to struggle with things like selecting seats and purchasing exit rows or preferred seats with codeshare flights on SQ metal, even after going through the call centre (either one).

I would have thought this would have been fixed or SQ was more capable of taking control of such matters if they operated the flight.

That is a worry. You'd think it would be easy.

Rethinking this one and I am guessing VA codeshare during a sale would be better than Flexi as that is fairly expensive. It would be great to get 120 SCs for ~AUD750 which would make Gold worth ~AUD2500.

Semi related question.

If i book SYD-SIN-HKG in Y on SQ website and credit to velocity to receive the SC (SC run)

Can I use Krisflyer points on the SQ website to upgrade from Y to J ? and receive points and SC on base fare?

Is this possible and has anyone achieved this?

Cheers,

I cannot see why that would not be possible with an SQ flight number.

Im doing BNE-SYD-SIN-MEL-BNE in J, codeshared from VA website, will be great for 340 SCs and 37k points.

Yes. I have done this. First dummy book on SQ website to check availability of J award (usually same for upgrade)- mostly SQ "SAVER" upgrade interests me. WHY
Purchase the SQ Y bucket ticket that allows for upgrade: Y, H and sometimes E, on SQ, Enter your VA FF Number. Pay, receive and then request "upgrade" under Krisflyer points on your SQ PNR.. presumably you have enough or transferred some into your Krisflyer account (for example from VA), or other SQ Krisflyer partner. Not very complicated if you have the your VA and Krisflyer FF accounts linked. In fact, mostly seem-less for me. This is a great "enhancement" for me between VA and SQ FF programs.
