Hi
My adult son has 6,400 velocity frequent flyer points that about to expire on 30 Jun. He either has misplaced or never got a new card with a smart chip so he cannot use it to get points from BP to extend the expiry. If he transfer the 6,400 points to me, and I purchase say a David Jones gift card for 9000 points, would the 9,000 point be deducted from which balance?

Alternatively would the better option be for me to transfer to him 5,000 plus so he can buy the gift cards?

He could get a temporary BP velocity card at the servo and link it to his account online?

In order to keep the account active.

If he transfers 6400 points to you, any points redemption you make, will be deducted from your balance, not his.

If he's not fussed about keeping his account active, do this. If he wants to maintain the account, I'd go with the BP temp card option.

How old is the velocity card in question? I don't have a Virgin global wallet chip on my card I use and it seems to still give me points at BP.

I think the OP assumes you need the Global Wallet card. Owing to too many confusions at small DL lounges in the USA (the Global Wallet card has no mention of it actually being Virgin Australia, just Velocity), I actually went back to the old style card.

number8, your son doesn't need a chipped card. When you purchase fuel at BP, they just swipe the magnetic strip.

Transferring points to your son won't extend the expiry date so I would suggest your son transfer the points to you. When he gets his account sorted with some more activity and the count begins again you could always transfer the points back if he wants to keep the points. Gift vouchers are poor value, better try and save for a redemption if you can.

Be very careful with the older, original Velocity cards. When my one (issued in 2009) failed to collect points for fuel purchases, I investigated and BP has told me over the phone that they do NOT accept cards issued prior to 2012. The card may swipe in the machine, but many BP terminals don't record the velocity number and you'll find the docket doesn't allocate points.

Thanks everyone

The card was original issue way back 2006 or 2007. I will ask him to get a temporary BP velocity card if that doesn't work I will him to transfer all the points to myself and I will purchase a gift card with it assuming those points will be used for the purchase.

Hi, sorry slightly tangential question, if my +1 pools to me the points will remain active according to MY activity right? And not his infrequent activity? Just confirming this is how it works.

Answer to question 1: Correct.
