THE Vatican is to began a new charter flight service to ferry pilgrims to holy sites around the world, starting with a route from Rome to Lourdes in France on August 27, it was reported today.
Cabin crew "specialised in the voyages of a sacred nature" will man the planes, provided by Italian carrier Mistral Air, and the interiors will be decorated with sacred inscriptions such as "I search for your face, Lord", ANSA news agency said.
Cardinal Camillo Ruini, vicar of Rome, will be on the inaugural flight to Lourdes, and other routes are expected to follow to places of pilgrimage such as Fatima in Portugal and Santiago di Compostella in Spain.
A route may even be opened up to the sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico.
