VA1 to QR flight connection

I have 2 awards booked with Velocity: SYD-DOH on VA then the next morning (but less than 24 hours) a QR flight to Malta also booked as an award using Velocity but a separate booking. So can I check my luggage through? I plan to stay at the airside hotel overnight.

Interlining separate bookings is technically "at agent discretion," but the success rate is high if both flights are on QR metal (even if one is a VA flight number).

At SYD T1, go to the check-in counter. Present both PNRs printed out. If they refuse to check it through to MLA, your backup Airside plan is solid: the Oryx or the Sleep ‘n Fly pods in the terminal are great, but you will need to clear security again if you have to collect and re-check bags.

Thanks @Montien - so no need to clear immigration then - would be very helpful to check through as layover (overnight) is only about 9 hours so not much time to check-in to a hotel (thinking Oryx not sleep pods) and get back to gate for next departure.
