VA upgrade certificates

Can I use my VA Plat upgrade certificates for someone else? I won't be flying.

I have had success in the past upgrading my wife without me flying, but technically i believe the T&Cs say you must be travelling. Gamble really, depending on who you get on the Velocity phone line.

My wife tried to use hers to upgrade me and no go.
She tried on three separate occasions with three different operators at the Plat desk, got a flat no each time. Even tried the "it's a surprise for him, pretty please" line, to no avail.
Would be interested to know if you have more success. Good luck...
