Since it's looking increasingly like VA won't offer an easy way to comped status this time around for the status-matchers like myself, I'm looking at doing some status runs to get me back to platinum.

Leaving aside the question of sensibility of retaining plat, what's the cheapest way for me to earn 585 SCs by the end of August?

I'm in MEL and all things being equal would prefer not to do an overseas run, however if that's what it came down to will consider it.

Look forward to getting some solutions.

It's by no means comprehensive and will only net 80 SC's but OOL - MEL - OOL via SYD on a flexi for $478 isn't a bad option so you'd think MEL - OOL - MEL via SYD should be the same price

You could position to OOL via MEL - SYD - OOL and then do a OOL - MEL - PER for $389 and use some points to try out the A330 J for fun.

Maybe MEL - SYD - OOL - MEL - PER overnight and then return? That run should give you 300 Sc's or 600 if you want to do J the whole way

I'm sure another member will pop up with an amazing run somewhere directly out of MEL for you though!

Thanks bass_ke, some rough calculations show that it would cost around $4,000 by my reckoning to get the SCs I need to requal platinum. Looks like I might have to suffer a drop to gold... still having a look at routes but cheap runs seem hard to find...

Tough gig on such short notice.

You really need to get to the USA and do some "non refundable" first class journies on Delta.

Even then, with just two weeks to go, it's gunna be expensive

Closer to $3000 if you grab some good SQ J fares in Asia coupled with a SQ fare ex Australia. Would have been a lot cheaper to do it before June 30 burning points.

OK, it looks like reality is sinking in. There would be far worse ways to spend my time than in SQ J but then again I'm realising that that shiny card is probably not worth north of $3,000.

Indeed... I did use some points before then and also set up family pooling but it was always going to be a stretch.

I was hoping that VA would throw out another overly generous requal offer but I guess they need to start making real money now and I totally get that. Would have been nice if they did, no major loss if they didn't.

Thank you all for your replies. VA, plat has been nice.

For a recent trip to BNE, I wanted to return out of OOL having never flown through the airport. I discovered on other online websites that I could route OOL-ADL-MEL for $100 more on business class but earning more status credits. This option is not available on the VA website though but can be booked through the call centre with the service fee waived.
