I understand it's possible but you can't book anything online. I've had no satisfaction trying to use the phone to books flights to NZ on points with partners so I'm wondering about flights in the USA. Delta and Virgin America are partners?

Want to fly YVR-NYC (any NY airport) and also MCO-LAX. Delta flies the first route and both VX and Delta fly the second. There are four of us and I have about 200K points. I know the prevailing wisdom here is to use points for upgrading but points are money and I'm trying to keep the costs to a minimum where possible so am happy to burn the points in lieu of flights. For cheap legs like LAX-YVR I wouldn't bother.

Am flying June-July 2015 so wondering if I have a chance of getting four seats with points. When I tried to use points for NZ I was passed aroudn through various operators and got no joy at all.

Very interested in any response to OP question. Have heaps of points on QFF and struggling for MCO-LAX seats around school holidays July 2015, thought about jumping to my velocity points as we are flying LAX-BNE on virgin rewards booked as soon as they released - also for 4 passengers

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I booked a reward flight last year with no problems over the phone. My flight was on the same PNR as my international sectors so I don't know if that makes a difference, however I don't think so. I booked it on 26th December for a 27th March '14 departure. My flight was SYD-LAX (7 day stop over - I actually flew to SJC which I booked myself on VX return to LAX) Then LAX-JFK (reward flight on VX, however I did have a choice with them or DL) and then LAX-SYD. All booked over the phone and had no hassles. No extra charges either for booking over the phone. I am WP but I am sure that made no difference. Good luck.

Ive used points for VS flying LHR to JFK and and VX IAD to LAX - just phoned the plat desk and it went through no probs.

From experience, VX releases award seats closer to the date of travel, but you can always call VA. I would start with searching on delta's website (sign up with sky peso) and look for the flights. Then call VA. Anything on saver level can be booked at minimum amount of points according to VA chart. If you have AA or qantas points, you should consider Cathay on YVR - JFK. They release 2-4 award seats a year in advance and/or two weeks to date of travel.

Thanks for the replies. Will try it out.

I've had no problem with about 3/4 of the reward flights. But I often have to go First, which still isn't that much points internally, but it seems the economy seats sell fast. Generally you need to work out when they open up the reward seats and book, you won't be able to phone a month in advance and get one, needs to be 6 months in my experience or more.
