I want to use points to send my wife and 3 month old baby to Europe (ex SYD) in J to visit family (I will follow a bit later through work). Destinations in Europe would be DUB or AMS so rather than trying QF/BA via LHR I though a CX flight to AMS via HKG would be good option. Using the Qantas wedsite it does not give me any CX flights when trying to search for award flights. Assuming I can use my points for a CX flight question is how do I check flights and book it ?

Thanks !

If you want to book award online via HKG, then you should do multi-stop booking, where your first leg is SYD-HKG, then HKG-AMS etc. This way you can see a lot more options especially CX.

Another way is to call up Qantas but will incur 2500 booking fee per pax.

I generally found more options to Europe via HKG rather than SIN/BKK due to high number of OW frequencies via HKG.

To check CX awards availability, perform either of the following tasks:

  1. Sign up to Asia Miles (CX/Dragon' FF scheme) and check for award availability using their website. Asia Miles is free to join. Then once you find an award seat, call Qantas and secure your flight.
  2. Use the KVS Availability Tool. Download the tool and subscribe to their membership. Once again after finding your award seat, then phone Qantas. ExpertFlyer may offer a similar service.
I recently redeemed an AMS-HKG Business award on CX in this way. With luck, Qantas may waive the Award booking fee of 5000 points.
