Hi folks,

I'm not a complete newbie, but definitely a novice. I am trying to find EK J seats MEL-DXB in around this time next year. I can see 7 seats in the O fare bucket on EK 407 on 1 March on Expert Flyer, but not sure how (or if it's possible) to book these with QF points. Are these reserved for Skywards members only?

Also, on the same day I can see 7 J seats in the O fare bucket on EK5009 (which is the code share flight number for QF9), but only 2 seats when I search this same flight as a Qantas flight on Expert Flyer. Is it possible that Skywards members have more access to QF reward seats in J than QF frequent flyers do?

Thanks for any advice or help...

I would hope not.

Have you tried using qf.com to actually search for the same flights? I don't remember the fare buckets off the top of my head so can't remember what O is but I would simply use qantas.com to search for the flights first.

You can only book an award, using QF points, on the QF web site or by phoning QF
Why do want EK407 and not QF9?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Hi Zainman,

Thanks for your reply. I checked Qantas.com before checking Expert Flyer. EK 407 has zero availability in any class, in fact it doesn't appear at all, and QF9 had 2 in J. Hence my assumption that Skywards members must be able access seats that we QF members can not.

The description of the Emirates fare class 'O' on Expert Flyer is "Business - Flex Award". This is the case for both EK 407 and EK 5009 (QF9).

EK J award seats booked with QF points are in the "D" bucket.
Thanks defurax, there must therefore be a separate bucket 'O Business Flex Award' that is reserved for skywards members and not available to us mere QFFs.

Thanks Mwenenzi, I don't have preference for EK 407 over QF 9, but after seeing zero EK availability on Qantas.com, I decided the check out Expert Flyer and found the 7 seats in O on both EK 407 and EK 5009 (QF 9), neither of which appear on Qantas.com.

O an a QF flight number would be economy
Thanks for replying Aussie-flyer. The description given to this fare bucket on Expert Flyer is 'Business flex award' when applied to both EK or QF metal with an EK flight number, including EK 5009 (QF 9). This is what caused me to question if Skywards members have more access to business class seats on Qantas flights than QFFs do?

We are flying Bne>Dxb>?? next April.
SWMBO will not fly thru syd when there is a direct , so it will be with EK.
My "druthers" position is to buy 2 J chairs with a QF flight number on the direct EK flight and then ask for a qff points upgrade to F.
Of course qf website has no interest in facilitating this arrangement….. surprise surprise.
I wonder how the upgrade availabilities run for ek flights with qf #'s..
Does the agreement require a certain level of availablity or is it all luck ?
I may slip back to silver by april too so thats a factor to consider.. places different values on status run options
All wip

Found this which looks like answers your question.

6. Can I use my Qantas points to register for a Flight Upgrade Award?
Flight Upgrade Award requests using Qantas points are available on eligible Qantas fares on flights that are operated and marketed by Qantas (QF) only. To be eligible for an Award Upgrade you must have the Qantas (QF) flight number on your ticket and the flight must be operated by Qantas (QF).
Qantas Frequent Flyer Award Upgrades using Points will not be available on Qantas (QF) codeshare flights operated by Emirates (EK) or Emirates (EK) flights.

You can only upgrade QF marketed and operated flights with your QFF points. So you won't be able to request the upgrade on a QF codeshare operated by EK.

thanks defraux and aikman .. should have read the rools before riting….another bright idea consigned to the dustbin of history.
Getting one's druther's isn't easy.. :)
