I recall once upon a time that the Velocity Platinum GCC told me that I was able to book flights with points and then use my complimentary upgrades to upgrade to Business.

I booked some award flights and just rang the GCC and they told me I was unable to upgrade my award flights. Does anyone have any further clarification on this?

You need to have booked a flex fare to upgrade with either points or complimentary upgrades

I don't think it was ever available. Upgrades have been from Flexi Fare only for as long as I have been flying Virgin.

Economy reward seats appear to book as Saver so this may have closed that option, as scwappy has indicated.

Flexi fares purchased using points (ie any seat awards) are probably upgradeable using points. Reward fares are definitely not upgradeable - firstly because they're reward flights (T&Cs explicitly state these are not upgradeable) and secondly because they're not flexis.

And to take this comment one step further, the new VA system of bidding for upgrades can be done on any seat awards but not on rewards which tends to support Fruitcakes summation. (this is answered in the FAQs on VAs website re bidding for UpGradeMe seats).
