The QFF news email mentions that it is now possible to request an upgrade on flights from SYD to SCL operated by LA (on the QF codeshare, ie QF 321 & 322).

The T&C have been modified accordingly:
~*Classic Upgrade Rewards*are available on eligible paid and confirmed Qantas*domestic*and*international*flights with a QF flight number on your ticket and from time to time on codeshare flights operated by another carrier that have a Qantas (QF) flight number on your ticket.*Classic Upgrade Rewards*are subject to capacity controls and availability is limited.*Classic Upgrade Rewards*are not available from all fare types. See*tables*for details.

I would have thought EK would have been the first partner to allow codeshare upgrades. But I think that codeshare agreements between QF and LA or SB for example are very different than standard codeshare with OW airlines. When booking a QF flight operated by LA or SB only a few seats show up on the seat map. It looks like each partner is allocated a specific number of seats which they "own".

If Qantas rolled this out with EK I'd be as happy as a pig in the proverbial.

I saw this in the newsletter I received today and thought it was a typo as the website link doesn't mention anything.

I suspect it might be because on that flight it appears QF effectively owns x business seats and y economy seats and thus can sell them/upgrade them as QF sees fit.
Different to EK flights

I seem to recall an article about 12 months ago that quoted Tim Clark as saying that QF upgrades were too cheap and QF would have to increase the points cost if EK were to allow it to happen. As QF upgrade costs are nearly the same as an actual confirmed award seat I would not like QF to go down that route.

Isn't any option better than no option?

QF points are so cheap and easy to come by nowadays. I'm at the point where I use them wisely and still have plenty left over to use on the less worthwhile options.

And there in lies the problem.

Qantas is not doing enough to help out frequent flyers use points earned from flying but you are suggesting Qantas make it easier for people earning points from paying company tax to the ATO to use those points?

A point no matter where it came from is still a point. The more options to use them the better.

I can't help how many QF points dish out, but I can help how they get used.

For the sake of clarity, this new enhancement I think is neat. Hopefully it leads elsewhere to other CS services.

I recall something to this effect as well from Tim Clark. Problem is - if you could use QFF points to upgrade on EK... It disincentives pax from choosing QF planes.

Unfortunately there's no other codeshares where QF gets a dedicated allocation of seats - somewhat a requirement in order for this to easily occur as mentioned by moa999.

The SA partnership used to be the same setup as LA where SA gave QF a dedicated allocation on their PER-JNB flights and QF gave SA a dedicated allocation on their SYD-JNB flights. The same means of upgrades on the SA flight would have also been possible if that partnership had continued.
