QF have been selling PE at massive discounts ex Asia for a few years now, its obvious that is not making sense for them on the shorter flights which naturally the A330s do so they are not going ahead with expansion of the class, in fact its declining of course.

Which is bizarre when it works so well for CX....!

Its working for them in the same areas as QF, long haul as mentioned in their results. Short haul I suspect its the same as Qantas, a big struggle, however they do have the benefit of being able to offer daytime flights which mean PE is more attractive.

i don't understand. by that logic no one would buy business class for short flights either? cx is selling PE on even their shortest intra Asia flights now (those with international aircraft operating).

PE cabin on CX between BNE/CNS-HKG and vv was pretty full, when I flew it May last year.

I am sure it was, but one flight out of 13 in a given week is hardly a good sample.

CX have acknowledged that PE is working for them in long haul re yield, but short haul just their yield is still bad, overall their margin was worse last year than it was during SARs (2.6% vs 4%). The year they introduced PE, their yield on north asian routes was 10% below the regions average, this year 7% below, clearly they still have issues on all short haul with yield:

Bear in mind some of the pax in Y+ on CX will have onward travel, something QF no longer (in any decent fashion) offers ex-Asia.

So QF have to sell Y+ based on a single 6-8hr flight, whereas CX are selling on a 20hr "flight" proposition.

On HKG flights I find the sales for ex Aus PE to be much cheaper than the ex HKG sales. They seem to fill the cabin up pretty well.
