Newbie to the world of CX. Last week a friend caught CX out of BNE and said he upgraded his tix to J for about $1600.

Looking through the forum I can see some previous Upgrade & bidding trials. (http://www.australianfrequentflyer....s/cx-enhance-upgrade-bidding-trial-60877.html)

Is there a current system that I need to learn to leverage for my lounging benefit?

One way or return? CX is offering return business class in the region of $3500 upwards at the moment. Depending on the original fare purchased $1600 may or may not represent a good deal (also depending one way or return).

I've actually got a certificate for a free sector upgrade, thinking about flying rt MEL-HKG-BKK in PE around November, & using the OP-UP certificate to fly J during the HKG - MEL sector. Any days & times to look out for/avoid to use this for my advantage? I'd Hate to be on a flight where J is fully booked.

A good indicator might be award availability (especially last minute award availability). I know the midnight departure from MEL hardly ever has award seats available, even last minute, but the 0850 departure has plenty (and gets opened up at last minute as well). Maybe something similar from Hong Kong? The overnight is probably going to be busy but a day flight more open.

(Although that being said, the 0850 often ends up going out full from MEL, so maybe award availability means the seats get snapped up in advance leaving you less chance at the airport?)

Thanks for the advice. I was planning on using the OP-UP cert on the HKG-MEL leg for returning home at the end of my holiday. Also, if I picked a connecting flight with a 4 hour layover & checked in 3 hours before, would i get lounge access?
