This is a how-long-is-a-piece-of-string question as it relates to values.

QF allows me to upgrade my (usually) non-upgradable Y ticket (SYD HKG) but the asking points is too much IMO.

I wish to gauge your views on this issue:

Y to PE

Upgrade: 25,000 pts
Classic: 45,000 pts (for comparison)

Y to J

Upgrade: 50,000 pts (40,000 on the return - overnight - trip)
Classic: 60,000 pts (for comparison)

I see little value there except for the return trip (Y to J).

My yardstick is the 45,000 pts for J to F on QF12. To me, that is best value for a 12.5 hrs flight.

Your thoughts ?

Cheers

PS: it is on a 388 bird.

upgrade to J. you will never regret it.
what are you generating your points and what value do you put on them?
If you are generating at 0.5c per points the Y to J upgrade is $250 bucks. To me it doesn't matter than you can get better/different value doing other things

Yes, Newk

But remember I had paid some $$ for the Y ticket already and they are asking for 50,000 pts which is only 10,000 pts less than a Classic seat !

Add them up and I think QF is too greedy there.

Granted, the time factor (i.e. availability) is another issue.

With Classic, you have to plan 10-11 months out. Here, it is not.

Of course, there is no guarantee but WP helps and the load shows J9.

I am inclined to go for the J upgrade on the return (overnight) trip as it is only 40,000 points.

More "value" there IMO

I have QF1/2 and QF11/12 coming up so the points may be better used there.

Appreciate your thoughts, Newk

Have a great trip and enjoy all the subsequent ones. And enjoy all the fruits of your points' generation :)

And yeah, I do understand the point about the classic award vs upgrade cost.
And I recently endured QF4 in Y, and you know it wasn't too bad. I'm not sure I'd upgrade it again....I had done so on QF3 on the way there. That said it was a 767. No comparison there with an A380. Then again there are pretty good Y seats in the 380.

So:as you say, it's very much a piece of string question

I tend to agree. I do not think the points required for upgrade reflects the true value of the upgrade unless of course you bought one of those cheap airfares from Expedia.br to SIN/BKK.

I would not upgrade until the J catering gets enhanced in the opposite direction to recent enhancements, now if QF opened up point use for upgrades on EK.....not that it will ever happen.

In a way, with some exaggeration, it's like paying a ransom at this (points) level.

Coming from a million-pts man, I appreciate your thought on the issue of values.

Yes, markis10, it would be a tragedy to be served another rice ball !

I've only done two Int upgrades....

Last year 4 x Y > J.......QF1 SYD-SIN point cost = 160,000

Last month 4 x J > F.......QF11 SYD-LAX point cost = 180,000

Clearly one is far better value than the other however, I do not regret upgrading and will continue to enter the lottery no mater what the class or point cost.

These points need to be used and cycled over all the time.......I've burnt quite a few M's over the years and still have a couple sitting in our 4 accounts.

Using them is a priority!

SYD-HKG is a day flight. I would use 25k points to upgrade to PE for the extra comfort. Service, food and drinks also much better then Y.
If you don't plan to sleep then J has no added value for this flight IMHO.

That's what I did and was granted by QF.

A compromise on 'values'

Not splurging at all costs and not hoarding points for J to F long haul upgrade either.
