I'm trying to use points to upgrade a flight this evening and nobody at the airport seemed to know how to do it. They told me to call a number and the lovely lady at the call center said the offices are shut over the weekend and it can't be done. Is this for real? No upgrades outside of 9-5 monday to Friday seems really silly.

Yep, you need to do it through Velocity. You can ring on weekends but you get the Phillipine call centre. Very painful.

I thought with the change to Sabre that upgrades have to be done by the reservations centre now?

But in any case, unless you're at the airport VERY early there is no chance - you need to call 4 hours ahead at a minimum for an upgrade.

No... It often ends up with multiple warm transfers (which increases everyone's hold times as agents are on hold to each other, not taking new calls.
