UK in December

We are going to UK in the first week of December for 10 days. This is our first trip to the UK.
Given the weather and cold conditions, our plan is to spend bulk of the time in London before heading to paris for our onward flights.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on nice day trips from london.
Also is it a good idea to spend a few days in scotland at that time of the year?

You could look at Salisbury; beautiful cathedral and nearish to Stonehenge.

I reckon Scotland will be very cold at that time of year.
