Just received an email at work, and it looks like I may be parting ways with the Red Roo ...
QF has been our preferred airline for as long as I can remember.

"Together with Virgin Australia, the [large multinational mining company I work for] has negotiated significant discounts across our domestic travel routes. I am very pleased to advise that Virgin Australia have been appointed as our preferred airline partner within Australia and we encourage you to book with them unless travel schedules dictate otherwise.

Virgin have made additional discounts available to [the large multinational mining company I work for], and as they look to expand their corporate clientele they have made significant upgrades to their products, services and commercial offer in the following ways:

  • Virgin is now offering [the large multinational mining company I work for] fares cheaper than most competitors, up to 20-25% on average compared to other major airlines;
  • Virgin will not pass fuel surcharges on to us for the next 18 months;
  • Virgin is now offering Gold Velocity status to all [large multinational mining company I work for] employees via the Pilot Gold program;
  • Virgin continues to add capacity in key areas, to enable further increases in growth to key operational areas for [the large multinational mining company I work for]"

Gold for *all* employees? That's a pretty generous offer. Can't help but think those lounges will become even more packed if they keep doing that for [large multinational companies that people work for] .

Here's hoping the VA J lounge opens sooner than later for WP's ;)

With out any bias attached, seems like DJ is getting desperate by offering all employees Gold, 25% off and no fuel surcharge....

By saying this i have no idea how these sort of accounts are negotiated in general, could be a normal situation.

Pilot Gold is only for 3 months, and extended only if you meet the pro-rated requirements.

If your [large multinational mining company I work for] had done this 3 years ago I would have been annoyed but Virgin Australia I find pretty good for domestic and trans tasman flights in its current form. If you are being booked on flexi fares then you get a decent food selection even at non meal times.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

At a former IT multinational I worked for our QF contract offered 60% off.

I book flexi mostly at our company on VA, and can say the food is basic, cheap and coughpy!! to say the least, also they don't rotate their 'menu' often enough, the amount of times I've had the disgusting wraps and taken one bite and put it back in the bag I've lost count!
The wraps are generally hard, very cold, so much lettuce that's all you can taste, they use margarine to "seal the wrap" resulting in it being oily all over, the egg and mayonnaise I have had multiple times has like half an egg at best, and 50 tonne of lettuce.
The roast beef wrap has like 1 slice of beef, and 50 tonne of lettuce.
Ok I may exaggerating a little bit, but you can see that I HATE VA flexi food its just rubbish!

QF domestic refreshments are even far better than VA Flexi meals, this weekend on a QF personal flight I got scones, jam & fresh cream on board a refreshment only flight and was small but yum.

To the OP - I wouldn't worry too much as VA are improving and its not like you are paying for the flights yourself, but you will have to actually do the miles in the air with them, so hope they look after you. But solely/majority flying going to VA may mean that you will have to think about your points accumulation strategy and maybe start diverting some/all of your credit card earn to Velocity? I assume you are based somewhere with a VA lounge? Don't forget family pooling with VA.

My employer uses BFOD so about half and half QF and VA at the moment - which suits me as I have a foothold in each camp.

Are you going to continue using QF for some work related flying and your own travel? At least you will have a soft landing to SG with QF in case the company policy changes in the future, and you look like getting Velocity gold so again - you will have achieved a foothold in each camp there.

If your employer is paying for flexi fares just do points upgrades. With my cc spend (not overly high) I can't remember the last time I flew economy, and I've never purchased a full business fare.

if your doing transcontinental flights, which is likely due to [large multinational mining company] you will be pleasantly surprised at the DJ offering, and pretty soon, the bad flexi meals are being replaced with warm meals on C2C flights.

In my experience DJ have always dealt with negative feedback more than appropriately, so don't be afraid to leave some.
