Just heard a snippet on Ch7 news , a UA flight has returned to Sydney after suffering a engine failure shortly after takeoff.

No mention of anything online

Had to do a fuel dump, which is not surprising.

It didn't get much of a mention because there were passengers. If there were hundreds on board, it would be the main story all night.

It was N105A, a ferry flight back to LAX without passengers. It had technical issues a few days ago and clearly they haven't been fixed. Reports were that there was an issue with one of the engines after take off. It had to dump fuel for about an hour to land.

That probably explains why there were 3 x UA 744's on the ground at SYD where there is usually only 2 (from SFO & LAX)

An engine broke down, so the plane came back. No news, really, just another part of normal life in aviation. For that to make it into the news, you need to meet the minimum requirements of having your tail painted in red, and that a marsupial must also be present on the said tail.

It kinda does and doesn't explain it. I was booked on UA840 on Friday 12th which was cancelled due to technical issues with the aircraft, however the aircraft which was to operate UA840 (the Wed 11th UA839 ex LAX) didn't even make it to Sydney. They rebooked the passengers off this flight onto other airlines the night before, I got booked onto QF11 and found out first thing that morning via a call from my agent, along with an earlier flight SYD-CBD.

What I don't follow is why the next night they flew two a/c out from LA. I would have though it would be cheaper to booked the delayed pax ex LAX onto other airlines rather than run just one leg.

Now out of interest my Star Alliance membership is with TG. Does anyone know if it is possible to do an orginal route credit, like Qantas does due to me being booked on another airline? The points from the missed flight would have got me gold, but now I am around 8000 short.
