Hi

Just checking to see if there is any protection with delays or misconnections when purchasing flights on one PNR but two tickets?
MEL-LAX return QF flight no
LAX-IAD return AA flight no
To get MEL-LAX-IAD-LAX-MEL

Thanks

Should be all good... baggage will be tagged the entire way...

Would this not be better described as one ticket, two flights (each way)?

This means that the trip MEL-LAX-IAD is fully protected as long as you board the first flight in a timely manner.

Not necessarily. You can have two separate ticket numbers (for one person) on one PNR.

Sure, but ir may be possible the OP is confusing marketing carriers on segments with ticket numbers.

An American Airlines ticket number begins with 001, A Qantas ticket number begins with 081, a Qantas marketed flight number begins with QF and an American Airlines marketed flight number begins with AA .
