I'm amazed that they got away with this..

Two arrested in Japan for scamming purchase reward points out of popular site

"Two men have been arrested for scamming thousands of dollars worth of purchase reward points out of a popular internet shopping site by booking tens of thousands of hotel rooms, Japanese police announce on Dec. 7th.

The two men, identified as Ken Muranaka and Kensaku Ohara, are believed to have reserved as many as 28,000 rooms at 1,600 hotels nationwide through the travel page of the popular shopping website Rakuten.co.jp under multiple IDs starting in February of this year, Seikei News reported.

Many Japanese websites do not require credit cards to make purchases or reservations in country. By booking and not cancelling the rooms, the pair generated a significant amount of reward points on the Rakuten site."

They might have now spoilt the credit card-free nature of many Japanese websites for others too. They’ll be popular.

I love that about sites like Rakuten and Jalan - but they will hit you up for a cancel fee on the higher end places. They send you a bill to your registered address.

So the honesty system is alive and well in Japan. No credit card payment, no hotel stay and still get the reward points.

I have problems getting points most times after I have registered, booked and paid and completed the stay....

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
