Hi everyone,

I thought I'd share my experiences flying out of Tokyo and onto Melbourne via Sydney.

This journey home was at the end of a 29 day trip to India and Japan. If interested in the full trip report you can check it out here:

Tokyo (Narita) Airport

I accessed the Narita Airport using the Narita Express train service which took approximately 68 minutes from Shibuya Station. I used a 7 day JR Rail Pass which allows use of the express. It's a good idea to reserve a seat which is no charge.

As I was flying QF I used terminal 2 for this flight. QANTAS opened the business checkin at 5 pm for the 8.30 flight which I could use despite only holding an economy ticket as a result of my QANTAS Club membership. Economy counters had not opened when I left at 5.05 pm I. Assuming they were waiting to start of 3 hour window at 5.30 pm or finishing with business pax.

The airport offers free wifi which is a reasonable speed. There are a good range of shops, restaurants and fast food outlets both land and airside. Immigration was very quick at 5.15 pm taking at e5 minutes.

I noticed a few free phone charging stations but didn't use them as I was headed for the QANTAS Business Lounge.

QANTAS Business Lounge.

The lounge offered 4 showers, 8 Mac terminals (but the internet wasn't working), 3 soda machines, a limited selection of wines and beers (including Fosters - why I don't know), limited selection of food (noodles, soup, pizza slices, ham, biscuits).

There were lots of spare seats even near boarding for QF22. The wifi was fast and you got a great view of QF22 plane from the lounge. Personally I enjoyed the shower facilities.

QF22 Tokyo to Sydney
The flight board as per schedule at 7.55 pm which is a first for me. Takeoff was as scheduled and i departed the plane about2 minutes early. Plane was a Boeing 747-400 and very clean, maybe refurbished recently? Most seats were full unfortunately for me but good for QF. I had chosen seat 48G which was a middle section aisle seat due to it having an empty seat up until 2 hours before the flight but that didn't last :(

Dinner was served around 30 minutes into flight. Options were; Beef with rice, Grilled salmon with rice, or Roast chicken. One bakery item (hot roll no butter), and Panna cotta with strawberry compote.

Breakfast was served 2 hours from landing so around 5 am Sydney time or 4 am Japan time. The In Seat entertainment system worked fine with the normal movie and television options.

Sydney Airport & QF DOM Lounge

We landed a few minutes early at the international terminal. On disembarking there seemed to be a lot of passengers from other flights arriving at the same time 7 am. Most lined up at the early ePassport machines, a good tip is to keep going closer to the Immigration area I'm certain this saved me a lot of time.

Despite the huge number of people I found a small line for a ePassport machine right near Immigration and I was though in about 8 minutes which considering the number of PAXs was brilliant.

My bag however was one of the last to arrive at the carousel. Clearing customs was easy ended over the pre completed card and was sent on my way without scanning. As I had a domestic flight I turned left once airside and headed outside to the QANTAS domestic transfer area.

My bag was already tagged for Melbourne and I had my boarding pass so not need to queue up I was sent directly to bag drop. You then clear security to go airside again and wait for a bus which I believe at that time was running every 10 or 20 minutes but it arrived after 2 minutes for me. The bus takes you across the tarmac giving you a great view of the international and domestic planes, definitely a different and enjoyable view.

At the domestic terminal 3, the main QF terminal, you arrive near gate 10 and from there it was a quick visit to the QF Club. Asking for the shower kit I used the facilities again (very clear but small compared to International lounges) and had a small breakfast after changing from shorts to jeans to prepare for the colder Australian weather. I really need to maintain my QC membership I get back up to Gold, it makes flying so much easier.

QF Flight Sydney to Melbourne

The last leg home after 31 days away. I had pre selected an exit row 14F on QF423. The flight was surprisingly full for a Saturday morning 10 am flight with people struggling to find space in the overhead bins.

I'm not 100% sure what they served on board as I dozed off. Why is it I couldn't sleep on the overnight flight but on a 1 hour 10 minute flight I could barely stay awake. The flight was on time.

The baggage carousel was the furtherest away from the exit point to landside and for some reason was shared with 3 other flights. Still my bag arrived fairly quickly this time and I was away and happy to be home and in the Australian sunlight (apparently this was a rare event since I left).

Just completing some old trip reports. If interested in my India and Japan 2015 you might want to check out my travel blog.

Back in 2015 I sent 31 days travelling to India and Japan. I was flying 4 legs with 7 flights across 4 airlines (Cathay Pacific, QANTAS, Air India and Sri Lankan Airlines), all in economy class :(.

I had lounge access in Melbourne and Sydney only as at the time I only had QANTAS Club Membership / Sliver Member (so only access to QANTAS lounges). I would have had time to visit the Singapore QANTAS lounge but the inbound flight was running late.

Leg 1
7,387 km Melbourne (MEL) to Hong Kong (HKG) - 9 hours 35 minutes (QANTAS A330)
Transit time: 3 hours 5 minutes
3,751 km Hong Kong (HKG) to Delhi (DEL) - 6 hours (Cathay Pacific A330)

Leg 2
2,040 km Delhi (DEL) to Kochi (cough) - 3 hours 10 minutes (Air India B787)

Leg 3
505 km Kochi (cough) to Colombo (CMB) - 1 hour 10 minutes (Sri Lankan Airlines A320)
Transit time: 6 hours 5 minutes
6,897 km Colombo (CMB) to Tokyo Narita (NRT) - 8 hours 50 minutes (Sri Lankan Airlines A330)

Leg 4
7,798 km Tokyo Narita (NRT) to Sydney (SYD) - 9 hours 40 minutes (QANTAS B747)
Transit time: 2 hours 50 minutes
706 km Sydney (SYD) to Melbourne (MEL) - 1 hour 35 minutes (QANTAS B767)

Total 29,085 km and 67 hours
