This trip was part of the Qantas double status credits offer and in response to the downgrade of QP - priority check in etc. Mrs ZX was about 150 points shy of retaining silver and I wanted to have a shot at gold this year.

The booking made as a JASA for the SYD-AKL for 36,000 points plus $227 including taxes each. A good deal I thought for 2,013 FF points and 80 SC x 2. On booking we selected seat 4 A&B, at T-80ish moved to 2 A&B in the front section of J. The AKL-SYD was a standard $220 Y fare for 1,677 points and 20 SC’s – all including the silver and class bonus.

It was way to early on a clear and cold Thursday morning when Mrs ZX and I got up to get to Sydney scaryport T1 by around OMG 4.30am for a 6.15 departure. I know you only need 60 minutes but with recent experiences, an hour leaves you no time in the lounge and generally rushing anyway to get to the gate in time.
We had pre-booked some parking for $122 for the 4 days. Check in was smooth with Mrs ZX learning that there was a small benefit in flying at OMG hour we would be in J, sky seats MK1, it was her birthday after all, which the checkin person noticed and said happy birthday!

During customs we were joined by a large crowd of Japanese students that were on the Narita flight that had been delayed from the night before. They looked worse that we did, and I had some (if not a lot) of sympathy. Nice touch was the duty free man that asked for duty free forms in Japanese, the not nice touch was the security person that select both of us for wandy, sniffy treatments. He didn’t understand that I understood his English, the security process and could stand with my feet slightly apart while he sniffed and wanded up down and around… but please hurry up I am missing lounge time.

We had a short stay in the quiet international lounge, with a little breakfast and OJ before boarding the plane. I noticed that they had a cooked breakfast in the lounge of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages etc. Looked fairly edible but thought we would get better on the plane.

VH-EBH Hunter Valley A330-200 36J/199Y (the Qantas source has the plane as EBL in One World livery but I didn’t see this) was waiting for us and once seated we were offered a glass of water, OJ or Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve, which I thought was good for the morning J wake me up. We waited for the last pax and luggage but still got away on time. J was about 2/3rds full.

We had the JT safety demo, the first time I have seen this, didn’t like it. The pilot came on with the usual comments and said how hard it was at this time in the morning and breaky would be on soon. Breakfast (menu below) was served about an hour into the flight, a little slow for my now very awake stomach and wasn’t going to leave me with any snooze time so was watching movies. This A330 goes to NYC, so had full international on demand IFE. The seat went back to relax mode and I settled into the flight. The senior Customer Manager (go JT) came and had a chat but left us alone pretty quickly as we weren’t in a chatty mood (no breakfast yet) and no business attire. Breakfast is an OR version so not continental and cooked but the Corn Cakes were ok, I think most were opting for this version. During breakfast I gave Mrs ZX a birthday card from the dog, complete with paw prints and then one from me. This was observed by the CSM and some crew who commented and wish her a happy birthday. Later on the flight, a small gift of Pinot Gris was received, much unexpected and appreciated… I might have to try this on my next flight J

The rest of the flight was pretty good plenty space to move around even thought its only 3 odd hours. Touch down was from the north so we ended up at the gate a little early for the gate mover and had to wait a couple of minutes and then another couple to try again at the right height. Then off the plane to customs, bags and exit t the background music of bird sounds.

Trip Report AKL-SYD B737-800 Y class March 2011

It’s a bit of a hike from the rental car desk to the Qantas premium check in. With passports in hand and no queue we checked in and had our assigned seats of 8D&F this leaves E vacant and if we were lucky no one in it. Pre clear customs (this is the best bit of premium check in) and off upstairs to departures. We moved through the customs and security with ease even though Mrs ZX has to be wanded as she can’t go through the scanners. NZ security like most others use a wand, stand on a section of carpet and has a good procedure about the process. Sydney T1, uses a very personal (sometimes much more than others) hand search on a cold floor (no shoes) and almost strip off out in the open.

Off to the lounge that hasn’t changed since Jan. The food is basic with some cold meats salad and warm party pies etc. Plenty to drink, a reasonable selection of sprits and beers. It was apple juice for me as I may have had one or five too many the night before. We used the electronic passport scanner outside to get our electronic immigration cards and we went to the gate one on the left downstairs. We were told, over the pa,
The gate was now closed and awaiting the last pax but as we arrived there were still 20+ to clear the boarding pass check. No error message on the scanner so no op-up, oh well better luck next time.

737’s look very very small parked in between a 777 and A380, maybe QF could upsize it a little, I still remember flying a 747-300? Skybed Mk1 from AKL and was most happy.

Seat 7E was taken (grrr) but I swapped with the pax to the isle and sat ready for takeoff. We waited a couple of extra minutes and took off to the south turning shortly after. The 737-800 has the IFE but limited selection 15 movies etc but enough for 3.5 hours.
The 2nd officer came on welcomed us and said we were going to have a great flight and wonderful service that Jet Connect provide, the weather in Sydney was a little wet.

Dinner started about an hour into the flight. Service tonight is a choice of creamy pasta or tomato pasta, pretty standard stuff unlike January which was probably some of the best airline Y food I have had. I even emailed QF that the service and food was excellent. I got a customer survey in response but I don’t think they have taken my non subtle hints on the great food expectation.

Plenty of drinks, apple juice for me but I was starting to feel a little more human but this stage. I thought about a beer but thought better of it.. turned out to be a good thought.

Later on the pilot came on and commented that we would be running about 5 minutes late as the weather in Sydney was raining but should still make the gate on time.

As we approached Sydney, we were told that we would be delayed as the weather had got worse and we started to circle. It was interesting to see the sunset and the moon rise a couple of times as we circled, looked good on the flight map as well, lots of green circles. After about 30 minutes we started our decent through the rain and clouds. It was an interesting landing on the far runway so a long taxi back.

Customs and immigration were pretty quite at that time, my guess is the normal 8pm flights were running late as well.

Thing we liked
A330
J Service from check-in to picking up the bags at the end.
J Breakfast
The ease of getting on and off a 737

Dislikes
Delays in breakfast
Coffee
As we were in a “good” seat on the A330 it was looking a little worn. Maybe next time I won’t try and get the best seat, second best might be better.

For what it was, I think it was a good use of points and cash, and benefits of the double SC’s, and these were posted 4-5 days after. J class to Akl is probably not worth the cost but it was nice to try. If I get an op-up in the future I won’t say no.

As a regular AKL flyer I can visualise most of it, especially the looong walk from rental car to premium CI.
